Welcome to the Men's Night 2009 Season

"YOU HAD TO BE THERE!"

Oct 9, 2009 | Posted by Chris Rhind

"YOU HAD TO BE THERE!"

If you weren't able to get out last Wednesday, you missed a great evening of fun and entertainment. It would better described as theatre rather than competitive golf but the 46 entrants made sure that it was a fitting end to a pretty good season in the MWL. Imagine the sight of 23 golf balls in play on the opening hole,in this case the tenth, in an alternate shot format. Spectacular!

Even the two-man teams, which were eliminated early, came back to the clubhouse glad to have participated and anxious to see which teams survived to the end. The winners were Mike Milunovic and Mark Volkov, who received $125 apiece. In second place Paul Egan and Helmut Pankratz at $100 each and in third spot, the dynamic duo of Jeff Fox and Gene Tatti, who took away $75 each.

With the Awards Dinner to follow, members had time to mellow out before the food was served. And good food it was. Bernie Hanna had impressed on Pepperwoods the importance of the occasion and they responded at a very attractive price of $30, including a liqueur. If you are already feeling bad for missing all this mark your calendar for about the same time in 2010. Maybe you could start a new trend by competing in the Mr. Congenialty contest – optional dress?

The prize table, funded by the MWL and supplemented by Mark Cunningham, was well stocked and well received. Every registrant's name, all 108, was in the hat so those of you who were not at the dinner should check with the pro shop to see if they are holding a prize for you. Thanks again to Bernie for the arrangements and Mark,Rob Petrie and Sam Kulafofski for their participation on the night and during the season. All three were 100%ers for their teams. Thanks too, to a number of draw prize winners who voluntarily declined their prizes and returned them to the pot to be re-drawn. It was a classy gesture on their part.

For the League and Play-off winners' portion of the program, Chris Rhind, in his swansong appearance, as MC, commentator, statistician and treasurer, paid tribute to the efforts of the winning players and distributed a total of $5,400 to them. This is the total of the season entry fee of $50 per person. He also confirmed that the $10 per week that we pay supplies the weekly prize money now at $15,131 plus the fee we pay to the owners of the computer system, plus Wednesday's prize table. Any surplus left in this account will be carried forward to 2010.

The final reminder to everyone was that we still have $6,111 in the Hole-in-One Fund. A renewed MWL committee will have the task of deciding the alternatives for handling this fund. Renewed committee means that Bernie Hanna would like to have some help in the input and function of the committee in 2010 and beyond. A few of you, who obviously enjoy the Wednesday League, we had 20 100%ers this year should give Bernie a call and offer your services to lighten the load. He's in the book.

So, I hope this wraps up the season to everyone's satisfaction. We didn't all make a ton of money nor did we lose a ton. We had 18 consecutive weeks of playable conditions and fierce competition from start to finish. Captains drafted well to achieve near parity and there was always the post-game camarademie to remember over the coming winter. You have been patient and considerate of my written attempts to add a dimension to the actual activity on the golf course and for that I thank you most sincerely. If you are lucky, you won't get stuck with another limey next year!

(Exits stage right, tear in eye but free at last...!)

"TO THE VICTORS GO THE SPOILS"

Oct 1, 2009 | Posted by Chris Rhind

"TO THE VICTORS GO THE SPOILS"

The headline tells us it is that time of the year when the counting is done and the rewards dispensed. Both the 17 week League and the 2009 Play-off concluded just as the frost began to show on the pumpkin. In such a miserable summer overall, the MWL was fortunate to enjoy 17 consecutive Wednesdays of fine weather - no rainouts. Competition was closer than it had ever been with only one of the top five teams actually winning its final league match although Team 1 did manage to beat its opponent in the Play-off final, Team 8.

So, it was a bumper year for Team 1 (Snyder's Budgies) which won both the League and Play-off Titles, the first time that has been done, in the current format. It was a virtual wire-to-wire performance as it was only out of first place for four weeks in July/August. It's 12 - 5 - 0 record speaks for itself as does it's participation points record of 168 out of a possible 170. An all round excellent performance and congratulations to captain Russ Snyder and his careful construction of a true team of enthusiastic participants in Messrs. Kevin Adam, Lee Burtenshaw, John Conti, Mark Cunningham, Dan Goodwin, Jim Lawn, Max Patterson, Gary Rankin, Gary Smith and Rex Stephenson. A #1 team in every sense of the word! The pot at the end of the rainbow contains $1,323 for the League win and $1,053 for victory in the Play-offs.

In second place, just 18 points behind the leader, was Team 5 (Baird's Bairns) whichfought all summer long to get into that spot and by doing so earned a team prize of $756. Third place went to Team 2 (Saunders' Sandbaggers) who hung aroun the upper echelon and will be rewarded with $661. Alone in fourth spot was the surging Team 8 (Mike Turczyniak's Turtledoves) @ $586 and the fifth and final money position, worth $454, went to Team 6 (Fox's Terriers). As Play-off runner-up, Team 8 also picks up a team prize of $567. And that, gentlemen accounts for the $50 entry fee each participant paid at the start of he year.

The weekly competition concluded with Teams 2 and 3 (Urban's Boundaries) in a tie for first place worth $28 per player. Third place was taken by Team 9 (Kudlats' Koalas) and was good for $20 for each team member. This side of the MWL competition paid out some $13,781 in pro shop credits during the year, with another $750 earned in Tombstone and another prize pool to be offered in the forthcoming Closing Day's extravaganza, "Swat-fest". These activities are funded out of the weekly $10 fee, each member pays. It also pays for the weekly use of the computer system.

Any funds left over are, or will be, used to offset entry fees into special events and prizes thereof. They will also contribute to the prize table on Closing Day, so that's another reason to make it for the Dinner at least, even if you are unable to get away early enough to join in "Swat-fest". Beverage tickets will be distributed to members, who are there for either or both. How many more reasons do you need to get you out next week?

We had 88 players tee off this week out of a current total of about 106 remaining members. A few were eliminated by physical ailments along the way but the average attendance has been in excess of 90% every week, which makes this season the best supported of any. The MWL is a team oriented competition but that does not prevent us from recognizing individual accomplishment. We recommend that you look at the table of Low Gross and Low Net players on the web site, or in the Men's Lounge. Although our pros feature in the low gross table, as one would expect, our amateur stars give them a good run for their money with 2 or 3over average scores for the season. On the Net side, the top ten all have scores very, very slightly over par, which suggests that their handicaps are well in line with their performances. It seems to be a validation of the MWL handicap system.

Every player earned some of the prize money during the year. Considering the common entry fee of 17 weeks @ $10, 35.5% of the players made a profit of varying degrees, 7.5% broke even and the remaining 57% lost money, again in varying degrees, but nobody was shut out for the season. The 'winningest' teams were 2 (Saunders' Sandbaggers) with $213 followed by Team 3 ( Urban's Boundaries)at $211 and Team 6 (Fox's Terriers) at $176, per person that is. Some individuals at the top of the money tree have larger totals due to the inclusion of their Tombstone winnings.

This week Dave Read's (9) net of 32 led the field, closely pursued at 33 by Jim Henry, Ian Hamilton and Jim McDonald. Rob Petrie led the grocers with a 37, just ahead of an angry mob of members, at 38, led by Gary Tuff, Vince Marchesano, Rick Trainor and the 'almost double man' Jim Henry. Mark was in this group also to back up his colleague. While we have to concede this  victory to the Pros, they are so far behind on the season that it is a courtesy to them to permit this triumph to be published!

2009 was a 17 week season and it is noteworthy that 20 of the players turned out every week. You can see their names in the sidebar on the web page. Thank you, gentlemen.

We also have a last category to draw your attention to; players whose scores have counted towards their team total every time they have played. There are three such individuals in the MWL. Louis Levy went six for six, Vince Marchesano went 14 for 14 and Brad McFadden went 16 for 16 and, while he also topped the table of low net averages, he also was one of his team's low gross scorers on occasion. Clearly a strong candidate for the League's MVP (if we had one!).

The year ends, gentlemen. I hope you have enjoyed the MWL and will find the closing information to be a wrap-up of the goings on. I suppose its inevitable that you will want one more story, so here goes:-

A man is standing at the gates of heaven. To his right is an attractive woman and to his left a ladder. The woman says, "Come with me through this gate and spend eternity with me, or climb the ladder to success." The man, who had always been eager to get ahead in life, chooses the ladder.

When he gets to the top, he finds an even more beautiful woman standing in front of another gate. Next to her is another ladder. The woman says,"Come with me through this gate and all your fantasies will be realized in perpetuity, or climb the ladder to success".

This time, the man is tempted by the lovely woman but his ambition takes over and he climbs the ladder. He again encounters a woman and this time she is the most breathtaking creature he has ever seen. She says,"Come with me and I will satisfy your deepest desires forever, or climb the ladder to success."

Oh... what to do? He'd love to stay and gratify his carnal desires - but is just so driven by greed and ambition that once again he decides to climb the ladder.

He comes to another gate but this time there is no woman waiting for him. Instead, a chubby and rather unkempt, elderly man with a scruffy white beard approaches him.

"Are you God?" the man asks.

"No, I'm Sess."

Take the rest of the year off - after next Wednesday, that is.

Great job once again Chris. I look forward to your musings every week. The MWL is the hi-light of my week here at the Bev and I know the guys sincerely appreciate the effort you put in to make it great.

"PENULTIMATE PERFORMANCE"

Sep 24, 2009 | Posted by Chris Rhind

"PENULTIMATE PERFORMANCE"

Hard to believe that we have only one more outing before the season ends and still there are outstanding issues.

In the weekly competition Team 2 (Saunder's Sandbaggers) returned to form and beat Team 6 (Fox's Terriers) to cement their place in fourth spot while relegating their opponents to fifth place, for the time being. In doing so they pick up $30 per player and first place. Second place and $25 goes to Team 5 (Baird's Bairns), which handily overcame Team 3 (Urban's Boundaries) and third place, and $20, went to the ninth place Team 4 (St. Cyr's Sticklebacks) which rose to the occasion and knocked off first place Team 1 (Snyder's Budgies). Remaining weekly winners were Teams 8 and last place Team 10.

Going into the final week of play it looks as though Team 1 is safely home in first place even if they lose their forthcoming match to Team 3. However they also play Team 8 (Turczyniak’s Turtledoves) simultaneously in the Play-off Final so they can't afford to be casual in their approach. Team 8, meanwhile, will have to make an extra effort to win the Play-off. The last time these teams met, in August, Team 1 was the winner so it’s payback in the play-off time. By now you will have gathered that the semi-final winners were Teams 1 and 8 so have at it brothers. 8 goes in with a LLWWWW record and 1 has a WWWWWL showing in its last six matches. It’s a pity we can’t sell tickets to this one!

Third and fourth places in the league may still change as Teams 8 and 2 are only a point apart. This will give their opponents Teams 7 and 4 a chance to influence the final standings. While Teams 9 and 6 are in sixth and fifth places respectively, AND PLAY EACH OTHER NEXT WEEK, it will require something of a miracle for the Koalas (9) to overcome the 21 point spread between them. So, there is still much to shoot for on the 30th, including $800 in prize money, 2 holes-in-one worth over $3,000 each, top 5 teams’ prize money and the play-off winnings. All prize money will be presented on the Oct 7th Closing Day Game and Dinner and we hope that as many as possible will turn out to make it a memorable occasion.

The Amateurs versus Professionals ongoing contest was again won by the former in the persons of Rick Trainor(36) and Frank Safian(37) over Messrs. Petrie and Cunningham(38). Congratulations to all the amateurs who have contributed to this very significant performance.

On the subject of performances, if you check the locker room notice board you will find everyone's statistics for the year to date, just in case anyone is heading south/west/east or even north before year end. In column order you can see your MWL handicap, the # of rounds (out of 16) you played, the number of times your score counted towards you team's total expressed as a total and as a 'proficiency' ratio as well as your average gross and net scores. MWL averages appear at the end. No doubt you will analyze these figures repeatedly over the winter months but please keep the results to yourselves. Some of us do have other lives!

And now for a penultimate story. Maria had just been married and, being a traditional Italian girl is a virgin and very inexperienced with men. On her wedding night, she and her new husband are staying at her mother’s house and she is very nervous when bedtime arrives.

"Don’t worry, Maria, " her mother says. "Tony’s a good man. Go upstairs and he will take good care of you".

So, up she goes and when she gets there, Tony takes off his shirt and exposes his hairy chest. Maria runs back downstairs to her mother and says, "Mama,Mama, Tony’s got a bid hairy chest."

"Don’t worry, Maria," says her mother. "All good men have hairy chests. Go upstairs. He’ll take good care of you."

So, up she goes again and when she gets back to the bedroom, Tony takes off his pants, exposing his hairy legs. Again, Maria flees downstairs to her mother. "Mama,Mama, Tony’s got hairy legs."

"Don’t worry, Maria. All good men have hairy legs. Go back upstairs and Tony will take good care of you."

So, up she goes one more time. When she gets back to the bedroom, Tony takes off his socks, and she can see he is missing three toes on his left foot! Alarmed, she runs downstairs. "Mama, Mama, Tony’s only got a foot and a half."

"Stay here and stir the pasta, Maria," says the matriarch. "This is a job for MaMa!"

Have a good week.

"SCORING YOUR WAIST SIZE?"

Sep 17, 2009 | Posted by Chris Rhind

"SCORING YOUR WAIST SIZE?"

Looking over the results this week left the impression that the first touch of a Fall temperature adversely affected the scores or had someone quietly introduced an aditional contest, "Shoot your waist size"? I can't remember as many mid-forties to mid-fifties scores in any previous weeks. If that was the case, then Team 4's (Sticklebacks) even par score was particularly noteworthy, as were the individual low gross of Dave Murphy of 34 and the same net number by captain, John St. Cyr. This was the case of a last place team upsetting a third place team to capture $30 per person. Can you repeat next week, John, when you take on first place Team #1?

Our representative grocer this week, Dave Murphy, triumphed over the pros, represented by Rob Petrie, whose fate was sealed when the amateurs moved ahead to 9 - 5 - 1, with two matches remaining. If you look at the average low gross scorers for the year you will see that our three pros made it into the top ten but so did seven of our amateurs. Check out the names on the web-site. Back to Mr. Murphy who also completed the double by being low net at 33, an honour he shared with Rex Stephenson (1) and Bob Green (9).

The balance of the week's winning teams were Urban's Boundaries (3) which saw off Volkov's Volunteers (7), Turczyniak's (8) Turtledoves which destroyed Saunders' Sandbaggers (2) and Kudlats' Koalas (9) which squeaked by Laurin's Laudables (10) by one point. Snyder's Budgies (1) were victorious over Baird's Bairns in the remaining match. Prize money has already been posted to the members of Teams 3 ($25), as well as Teams 8 and 1 ($10 per player) for their third place tie.

The Play-offs resume next week with Teams 1 and 3 tangling in the first semi-final while the other contest has Teams 8 and 9 going head to head. Coincidently they are also matched in league play with Kudlats' Koalas having an outside chance of making the fifth and final money spot in the League overall. Even if your team is not competing for a league position we hope that you will come out and play your assigned matches because you may effect the final outcome - and there's still about $1,600 of prize money to be won in the last two weeks, plus the holes-in-one worth over $3,000 per hole if you get lucky.

Overall this seems to have been the most competitive season we have had since moving to this format. We still had 95 players this week so if we are voting with our feet, this has to be telling the captains and the organizers that they have the right formula. There hasn't been a great amount of comment on the weekly summary and no negative criticisms. We really feel for the optimistist who finally got closest to the pin on the 4th last week and was hoping to win the Sleeman's contest only to discover that it had concluded the week before. However the biggest disappointment of the year had to have been felt by Lloyd Nicholson who did ace the 4th hole but in the pre-season event and not in league play. And that, of course, is the joy and frustration of this game!

So far, no one has yet stepped forward to take over the reins of commentator/scribe for next year. I now have my Dundas home up for sale and really don't know where I will be in 2010 so there is some urgency in resolving this matter. Please contact the MWL committee chair, Bernie Hanna, if you would like to give it a go. It's really quite fun.

Talking of fun, A teacher is explaining biology to her 3rd grade students, "Human beings are the only animals that stutter", she says.

A little girl raises her hand. "I had a kitty-cat who stuttered", she volunteered.

The teacher, knowing how precious these stories could become, asked the girl to describe the incident. "Well", she began, "I was in the back yard with my kitty and the Rottweiler that lives next door got a running start and before we knew it, he jumped over the fence into our yard!"

"That must have been scary", said the teacher.

"It sure was", said the little girl. "My kitty raised his back, went Ffff, Fffff. Ffff……

And before he could say "Fuck Off", the Rottweiler ate him!"

The teacher wet her pants laughing….
