Welcome to the Men's Night 2008 Season

" Time to Say Goodbye"

Oct 12, 2008 | Posted by Jack Boddaert

The title of a beautiful song by Sarah Brightman seems an appropriate way to announce the conclusion of the 2008 Beverly Mens Wednesday League. Also appropriate was the weather. Last Tuesday the weather was beautiful, last Thursday was perfect and Friday magnificent, BUT WEDNESDAY? Well Wednesday was like many of the Wednesday's this season and it pissed all day making for the most miserable conditions, especially, as you will see, for those players who had afternoon tee times. Under any other situation, we would have probably canceled the day and turned the course over to the water skiers to enjoy their thing but with the season, which had to end that day, and the most important matches of the season to be played and completed, we had little options but to slosh on. There were 6 of our 12 teams who were competing for anything meaningful and those 6 teams did a magnificent job of getting their players out, a credit to you all for making the effort and your team committment. To no one's surprise the 6 teams competing for anything worthwhile on the day accounted for 60 of the total 74 players who braved the elements. To those of you who didn't show up  -  I commend  you on your wisdom!!

Congratulations to Warren Bamber's Team 2 for finally wrapping up the League title, although it was a little nerve wracking for a  while. All Team 2 had to do was to have at least 6 players show up and earn participation points to make the title official, but with several players unavailable and the terrible weather conditions, Warren left the club late in the afternoon not quite sure if he could count on getting 6 players out. Eventually by evenings end 8 players had shown up, played not very well, but nevertheless, the title was their's.

The real league competition for the day centered around the second to fifth places between Team 1, Team 4 Team 5 and Team 7. By the magic of the league schedule this has turned out to be the closest and most exciting finish to any MWL season. These  four teams were playing between themselves to determine who finished where and by virtue, how much league cash each of these teams would take home with them. By the end of the day Jason Urban and Team 5 scored a very comfortable win of  over  Pete Borkovich'sTeam 4  to take second place and move Pete's down to finish fourth and Mike Rock's Team 1 squeeked a narrow 1 shot victory over Joel Burton's Team 7 to pull themselves into a second place tie with Team 5 ,  which left Joel's Team in fifth place.

We also played the finals of the playoffs last Wednesday with Mike Turczyniak's Team 12 going against Jason Urban's Team 5. As seems to be the tradition with our league, the Playoff winners seem to always come from the back of the pack and this season was no different, as the talented Team 12, who disappointed in their league play, finally came through to take the Playoff title.

Our prize money winners this week were Team 12 with $33, Team 5 with $28 and team 1 with $22, all in Pro shop credits.

Beat the Pro.

Obviously as the rain and wind intensified for the afternoon tee times you had to know that it would be next to impossible to record any decent scores in those conditions. And so it was to be, as the best Pro score was a 45. Perhaps it would be easier for Mark to declare an open bar policy at the banquet than for me to list the names of all those who earned their free drink.

Well gentleman it almost over for another season. All that's left is to have our closing day shotgun and closing banquet this Wednesday, October 15th. The 9 hole shotgun starts at 3.30pm followed by our customary closing banquet, where we will salute our champions, pay out lots of cash and give away a tremendous assortment of fabulous draw prizes. If you cannot make the shotgun event please join us for the banquet. It always turns out to be an enjoyable and entertaining evening. No doubt Mike Flannery will regale us with his fine Irish voice or maybe spare us by keeping quite for just a few precious minutes, if that's possible!. Having just returned from his native roots I suspect we'll have to listen to his rendition of Danny Boy a few times with probable assistance from his friends, Borkovich and Marchesano. Only in Canada will you ever get a Canadian, Serbian and Italian  singing a traditional Irish love song. PLEASE no requests from the audience. It's hard enough to get Flannery to shut up at any time without having his "fan club" encouraging him!

Sign up sheets both for the golf and the dinner are posted in the men's locker room.
We look forward to seeing you all there.

I'll sign off this this thought

           "Good,better and best.
            Never rest till the good
            is better and the better
            is best"

Thank you all for another tremendous season

WE GOT US A HORSE RACE - OR TWO!!!

Sep 25, 2008 | Posted by Chris Rhind

Horse Race Number One will be the final of the 2008 Play-offs. In the semis Team # 5 overcame Team # 8 by a score of 218 to 223. Team #12 put Team # 7 to the sword with a score of 216 (that’s even par) to 221. So captains Jason Urban and Mike Turczyniak have one week to mentally prepare their teams for the final showdown, but there are some interesting sidelines, which will be discussed later.

STOP PRESS NEWS******* Cunningham Comes Through!!! After a remarkable recovery from last week’s bout of sciatica ( my recommended cure must have worked although he may give credit to his chiropractor ), Mark turned in a remarkable gross score of 32, his best of the year. Just in time too as his pro colleagues were not quite as stellar and our members, after a string of victories in the Member versus Pro Stakes needed reminding that our Head Pro is a very talented golfer. So congratulations Mark. Your team captain is, of course, delighted that you picked the day you were pitted against the league leaders.

Now where was I. Oh yes – Horse Race Number Two is the final standings for the League. While it is not possible for league leading Team # 2 ( Warren Bamber ) to be overtaken, it does face a final game next week against play-off finalist Team # 12 ( Mike Turczyniak ). It’s a safe bet that the latter will be pulling out all the stops so there still remains a challenge to Team # 2 to finish with a 13-4-1 record.

The other four teams at the top of the league have a points spread of exactly 2 between them and next week will determine the final order of finish, second through fifth, and the resultant share of the league prize fund. What is extra special about next week’s fixtures is that Team # 1 ( Rock ), currently tied for third place, is pitted against Team # 7 ( Burton P. ), in fifth place but only one point back of it’s opponent. It may come down to participation so both teams simply have to get their full squads out and play their hearts out.

Would you believe that the other two teams scratching for position in this group also are matched against each other. Team # 4 (Borkovich ) with a 11-4-2 record and 279 points goes up against Team # 5 ( Urban ) with an 11-6-0 record and 278 points. On top of and concurrently, Team # 5 is competing in the Play-off final against Team # 12 ( Turczyniak ).

So it really is down to the wire to see how the 2008 season plays out. Yesterday’s attendance of 115 players is a testament to the competitive nature of the MWL and to the great weather we have finally enjoyed. It seems that we have played in all four seasons since our start-up. Remember the frost delay on May 28 and the couple of rained out cancellations but we have still enjoyed eighteen weeks of competitive golf with the full gamut of performances from our three pros and the 139 members who made up the 12 teams.

Don’t forget that there are still the Holes-in-One ( over $3,000 each ) the weekly prize money ( about $1,000 ) and the last spot in the Bubbafest to play for and your entry fee has already been paid. Maybe its your week to get lucky – but you have to be there!

Now for the results of yesterday. Team # 10 (Dowbiggin) led the field with a six under team par of 210, worth $33 to its members. Runner-up was Team # 1 ( Rock + Cunningham ) with 212 and $28 per head and in third place, with 216, the aforementioned Team # 12 ( Turczyniak ) which collects $22 each.

Closest to the Bubba was Frank Safian He joins the other weekly winners listed in the adjoining column who are invited to the Molsons Bubbafest on October 10th at The Legends, in Niagara Falls. This will be a breakfast gathering at the Club followed by a bus ride to the course. After play the bus will return to the Bev for a Wings and Beer supper. If you are one of the winners and cannot attend please let Bernie Hanna know a.s.a.p. so that we can find a replacement for you.

Closing Day/Night has been postponed to Wednesday, October 15 so as not to conflict with Yom Kippur. We still hope to have a golf tournament followed by a dinner with Awards and a prize table to die for! We will have the dinner at 7.00pm even if the weather prevents us from golfing. In case we do golf we may have to start at 3.30 but we can decide that closer to the day. When the sign –up sheet appears be sure to sign up for the dinner even if you can’t play that day.

I think that’s about all except for the story of the pirate sitting on a bench in port, throwing peanuts to the gulls. He has a wooden leg, a hook for a hand and a patch over his right eye. A curious child sits down next to him, summons up his courage, and asks the pirate how he came to have a wooden leg.

"Well," says the pirate, "I was standing on the deck of me ship one day, and a wave washed me overboard. Then a hungry shark attacked me and bit me leg off."

"Wow," said the little boy," How did you lose your hand?"

"Many years ago, I was fighting the navy, and one of them boys cut me hand off. Me doc couldn’t find a hand so he gave me this hook."

They sit quietly for a while, and finally the boy gets up the nerve to ask, "How did you lose your eye?"

"Well, I was standing watch up in the crow’s nest, and just as I looked up a seagull flew over and shat right in my eye."

"But…….how did that cause you to lose your eye?"

"It was me first day with the hook."

Good luck to everyone in their matches next week.

READY TO RUMBLE

Sep 18, 2008 | Posted by Chris Rhind

READY TO RUMBLE

The first night of the play-offs and two teams from the lower half of the league table and unlikely to make it into the top five money positions jumped at the chance to knock off some of the favourites and advance to the semi-finals. Team #8, captained by Dave Ormerod, won two of its matches in Pool "A" over Teams 2 and 9 (Bamber and McKelvey) while Team # 12 captained by Mike Turczyniak, won the necessary two games in Pool "B" over Teams 3 and 4 (Flannery and Borkovich). The other two semi-finalists were from the top half of the table as Team # 7, led by Joel Burton, beat teams 6 and 10 (the other Burton and Dowbiggin) while Team #5, under Jason Urban upset Teams 1 and 11 (Rock and McLachlan). Once again the system did give every team one last shot and now four remain to battle it out next week.

So, Team # 8 will play Team # 5 and Team #12 goes up against Team #7, with the winners advancing to the final in two week’s time. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the losers.

Meanwhile we also played a regular league fixture list for the sixteenth week of competition. Team 5 (Urban) had the low score for the night of 215, one under par, followed by team 12 at 222 and team 7 at 223. Their members will be credited with the usual $33, 28 and 22 in winnings.

Individuals worthy of recognition include Frank Safian with a low gross of 34, Dave Murphy with a 35 and Dave Pearson with a 36 all of whom beat the low pro Rob Petrie’s 37 which was tied by Gary Tuff and Colin Young. That still leaves it " Members a gazillion, Pros 2", for the year. Please spend your pro-shop credits soon to bail Mark out of a tight financial bind. Mark was out of action this week with sciatica. In good sportsmanlike fashion I did offer to tell him of a cure – on Thursday. It’s nutmeg worn next to the skin Mark – my mother swore by it ( or was that for bubonic plague – I can’t remember. Try it any way!).

Frank Safian also completed the rare double of low net as well with a 32 along with Kyle Foster. Right behind were Messrs. Pearson, Padden, Green and Greg Moore with 33s.

Two weeks remain to complete the league and the top five teams will be jockeying for final positions to the bitter end (see next week’s fixture list). The semi finals next week give the giant killers another chance to make the season worthwhile. This week we had 112 players and those participation points will undoubtedly feature in the final outcome. The weather channel calls for sunshine every day going into October so take advantage of what might be the best spell of weather we have had all summer and help your team to boot .

Mark your calendars for Closing Day/Night on October 8. It will be an early shotgun start at 4.00pm followed by a great dinner and prize table. Golf will be limited to 72 players so jump in quick when the sign-up sheet appears. If you can’t make the golf you are more than welcome to attend the dinner about 7.00pm. Also the Bubbafest is scheduled for Friday October 10 and will be an all day affair. It is sponsored by Molsons and will be held at The Legends in Niagara Falls (note – change of venue from the previously advertised Osprey Valley) and we will be bussed there and back from the club following a breakfast provided by Pepperwoods and a feast of wings on the return to the Club. By the way, Mike Flannery joins the list of winners of closest to the Bubba this week.

So play hard for the rest of the year even if you are not in line for prize money. You can be an influence on the final results and there is still the Hole-in-One pots of over $3,000 each to shoot for.

Happy Trails!.
