Welcome to the Men's Night 2010 Season

What A Finish!

Sep 10, 2010 | Posted by Todd Stanbridge

A fitting end to another great season for the BG&CC Wednesday Men's League!  It came down to the wee final moments, at the edge of darkness, to decide this season's champions.

Congratulations to Captain John Horan, and the rest of team #6 for an excellent season and playoff, becoming the 2010 Men's League champions. It truly was determined at the very last minute, as Captain Jeff Barclay and his band of "ne'er- do-wells" from team #11 were sitting tied for 1st place in "A" division, along with team #6.  With the Men's Lounge "buzzing" (and way! over crowded...needless to say, the Men's Lounge is too small) the Men's league "brain trust", Pat Alpaugh and Dave Pugh were scrambling for a resolution to a season ending tie. "Flip of the coin"?, sudden death playoff?, arm wrestling? were just a few of the options bantered about.  But in the end, thankfully, a good golf score from a Team 6 straggler broke the deadlock, and allowed John and and his crew to begin the celebration.  It made for some very entertaining viewing in the lounge.  Once again, congratulations to all of the members of Team #6.

Just as captivating, and significantly noisier, the "B" division champions were decided. (Hey, when you're in "B" division, you drink more....make more noise, that's how you got there!) Team #1 Captain, and co-title sponsor, Lou D'amato and his brood were already gulping down their 3rd bottle of "celebratory" 2005 California Merlot, cajoling about how the "master plan" to become "B" division champs had come to fruition, when the unthinkable happened.  Into the Men's lounge strolls Team #4 member Dino Costabile, quipping about how his score had not been posted yet, and that it would make all the difference. A bit of shouting and cursing between the  members of Team #1 and Team #4 ensued, (remember, "B" division, more drinking, more noise) anxiously awaiting the score to post. Well, without going into any of the inconsequential details, he was correct, and Team #1 went from winners to losers in less time than it takes the Golf Doc to style his hair.  Short story; Team # 4 was crowned "B" division  (crowned? can you be "crowned" in "B" division?) champs. Congratulations...I guess, to Captain Craig Mann and all of the members of Team #4...well done.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention all of the Men's Night sponsors, without them we wouldn't have a Men's League.

First of all, Co-title sponsors, Lou D'amato of Brantford Nissan, and Giuliano and Ennio Luciani of Luciani's Pizza.  As well, a huge thank you to Darren Mac Vicar and Todd Belliveau of Labatt's.

     Now the list of Weekly Prize Sponsors, again, a huge thank you;

Michael Hurley and Mike Hurley Jr., Hurley Royal Lepage Realty Long Drive (Open)

Gabe Gasbarini, Award Construction Long Drive (60 Years and Over)

Gregg Moore, Brantford Volkswagen, Graham Young, Young's Jewellers (Closest # 3)

Craig Mann, Blue Dog Cafe Longest Putt # 4

Nick Rizzo, RBC Dominion Securities Longest Putt # 5

Dave Pugh, Mobility Clinic Closest # 6

Bruno Gordon, Pin High Golf Closest # 7

Ron Risebrough, Unifirst Closest # 8

Todd Stanbridge, Walton Capital Management, (now TD Canada Trust, Mobile Mortgage Specialist)

Don Pritlove (Tim Horton's)

Gene Carrafiello (New Metal Recycling)

Bob Caissie (Culligan Water on the 1st tee every Wednesday)

Thanks to everyone for a great 2K10 season!  Don't forget "swatfest" next Wednesday!

Another great year as usual guys! Thanks to Pat and the rest of his committee for all your hard work. Men's Night is the best thing we have going at the club. P.S. Todd, good point about the men's lounge being to small (it was packed in there on wednesday)

Playoff Update - Is any team going to catch Team #6

Sep 6, 2010 | Posted by Ron Risebrough

Well our first week of the playoffs is in the books and Team # 6 remains in the lead for the overall championship. However, the race is getting tighter because Team # 12 and Team#5 finished in 1st and 2nd place, respectively for the week. Congratulations to both teams!!

Team #12 was lead by 3 gross scores of 37 by Rob Grinton,Ryan Greenfield and Eric Kehoe. I need to talk about Eric Kehoe's 37 because we witnessed something worth talking about. Eric got a hole-in-one on the 3rd hole. Then on the 8th hole, he finished a foot short of the hole for his second hole in one in a row!! I think Eric summed it up best with his comment on the closest to the hole marker on the 8th hole when me remarked "Get me a cab"  For the mathematicans out there,I'd love to know the odds of getting 2 hole in ones in a row!!

Congratulations to Gregg Forrest who earned a seat on the Labatt's Road Trip. Next week is the final week of the playoffs. There are a number of team prizes available based on your playoff placing so please continue to support your team as participation continues to be very important.

I want to remind all participants that the highly anticipated swatfest will be held on Wed. September 15th beginning at 2pm. followed by our annual Men's Night closing dinner and prize presentation.

Please signup in the lounge!!

Good luck and good golfing next week...

Ron

Some Stuff, Some Facts and Some Figures...

Aug 27, 2010 | Posted by Dave Pugh

The final week of our regular season was a strange affair.  I awoke on Wednesday morning to see that 35 members had already completed their round!   I wasn’t sure what surprised me more – that these players had played so early or that the pro shop had their scores posted before mid afternoon.  Then I realized they had played on Tuesday due to the senior tournament using our morning tee times.  Thanks to those 35 individuals for demonstrating flexibility.  Special kudos should be given to Dan Walker and George Brown (among a few others I’m sure) who felt so strongly about helping to decrease the stress on the tee on Wednesday afternoon that they played their ‘official’ round on Tuesday then came out again on Wednesday for a social game while the rest of us were trying to figure out which 5some we should join.

Speaking of 5somes, a few years ago it was proposed that the Wednesday Men’s League be allowed to play in groups of five because the volume of play made it very hard to acquire a tee time.  The request was denied with concerns regarding potential slow play being one of the given reasons.  Isn’t it ironic then that the only complaint I heard about slow play this week was from Rob Grinton – who played in a 5some behind the tortoise-like 3some of Hurley, Kehoe, and Greenfield.  I have it on good authority that these snails only saw the group ahead of them (also a 5some) once all day and that was in the men’s lounge after they finished!

Special mention this week must go to Joe Cohoon won the esteemed closest to the pin in regulation prize on hole #6 by holing out his approach shot for an eagle!  He used the adrenaline shot this provided to craft a smooth 54 on the front nine.

Our playoff seedings are now complete and can be viewed by looking at the standings.  Team #6 has a sizable lead but there is a 4 team race for 2ndplace in the ‘A’ flight.  Teams #2 and #13 will have an uphill climb to playoff prosperity but at least they qualified for the ‘A’ flight.  Teams #1 and #3 are tied for the lead in ‘B’ flight.  There are a number of team prizes available based on your playoff placing so please continue to support your team as participation continues to be very important.

Regular Season Summary

As has become a bit of a tradition I have looked at the stats for the first 13 weeks of the season and have decided to bore you with some observations.  As most of us are painfully aware John Horan’s team #6 has dominated the regular season.  The had a team scoring average of 290.3 which was almost 3 strokes better than team #5 who had the 2ndbest scoring average.  They also won 5 weeks with 2 weeks as runners-up.  They had the 2ndhighest participation and also dominated the money list.  Jeff Barclay’s team #11 defeated the leaders on the final week to move into second place with the oft maligned Paul Johnston leading team #5 to 3rdplace.  Bill Howden showed that his success of the last two years was helped by smoke and mirrors as he lead team #9 to a 12thplace finish and the worst team scoring average of 304.1 blows per week.  Bryan Monster deserves special mention as he lead team #13 to the ‘A’ division playoffs after two abysmal years as captain.

On an individual basis our head pro Bruce Rogerson achieved a remarkable accomplishment by having both the lowest gross and net scoring average.  This lowest average gross score would normally win the equivalent of the BGCC Men’s League Harry Vardon Trophy however after careful consultation with the committee and the league office it has been determined that in order to win the award the golfer cannot have any mid round withdrawals.  So I guess that DNF in week #8 affected both team and individual!  As such the award should go to Mr Dennis Hendershott with his average score of 36.33 however after careful consultation with the committee and the league office it has been determined that in order to win the award a golfer can't be a huge pain in the ass.  Sorry Dennis.  This restriction, by the way, also precluded the next 42 senior male members on the list so we've decided to ignore this category yet again this year.  Connor Novak had the next lowest net average score but suffered the same fate as our pro due to a DNF.  Lee Davey thus takes the net scoring title with a 35.44 stroke average.

37 committed members managed to play every week.  Another 54 only missed one day.  These numbers are spectacular and helped lead to over 2400 rounds being played over the 13 weeks – an average of 183 participants per week.  Tremendous participation (as usual) despite several weeks of threatening weather and one cancelled week.  196 of our 238 participants have won a weekly prize and appear on our money list.

Bernie Korfman deserves to be recognized for playing 12 times and counting every time for team #8.  This is particularly difficult for those players who tend to contribute net scores.  On the contrary Gary Bridgett played all 13 weeks and managed to count twice for a ridiculously poor proficiency rating of 23.1%.  In his defence, counting for the juggernaut team #6 was difficult this year.

I want to remind all participants that the highly anticipated swatfest will be held on Wed September 15.  Please signup in the lounge if you intend on playing

I was asked by a larger than life member of team #7 to please write something nice about Mr Don Murphy.  I figured why start now but the request was so heartfelt I thought I would give it my best shot . . . . .

                                        . . . . . . sorry Don, can’t think of anything.

IMPORTANT: The SWATFEST is scheduled for Wednesday September 15th beginning at 2:00 p.m. followed by our annual Men's Night closing dinner and prize presentation.  The SWATFEST sign-up sheet is now posted.  A lot of work goes into organizing this event so please be sure to sign up early.

See you next week

Dave

That was good. I was laughing out loud at the dig on Mr. Hendershott. Just for clarification - we finished our round in just over 4 hours, but those 5somes were really moving!

Posted by: Kehoe | Aug 27, 2010 11:55 AM

Those 5somes were moving alright. We thought at one point Bison had been introduced to the Brantford area and we had a stampede on our hands in front of us.......but the angry mob behind us kept diverting our attention away from the small herd.

FYI Dave, I quit smoking almost 4 and a half years ago and I'm not a big fan of mirrors but the rest of your stats were interesting. Good job

They Have Cookies On The Dark Side

Aug 20, 2010 | Posted by Steve McNally

As part of the writing rotation this year I am filling in this week for the vacationing Todd Stanbridge.   If you read my last write up you’ll recall my experience losing to Don Pritlove. This Wednesday, knowing that Don has been playing some great golf after a recent playing lesson with Bruce, I made sure to snatch up Don as my partner.  After a few holes of Don playing like crap I told him to just remember what Bruce had told him causing Bill Howden to blurt out “golf lessons are lost on people with Alzheimer’s”. Apparently, the only thing that ruined our day was the inability of Rob Grinton to find enough friends to play with on the busiest day of the week which had him trying to turn our group into a sevensome all day.

Last week, I played with Dentist to the Stars, Jim Kivenen. If you haven’t met Jim you’ve heard him or, at least, his laugh. Jim can shank a ball dead right and all you will hear is laughter. He could be the happiest man at the club and a bit of a prankster. Frankly, I think Jim is the reason they don’t let dentists use laughing gas anymore and I am not so sure he returned his leaky gas masks. Recently, someone told me that Jim hit the speaker button on the cell phone at the halfway house and the conversation went like this:

Wifey: Honey, I just found the nicest fur coat and only $20,000.

Jim:     Buy it.

Wifey: And I was looking at the nicest house this morning and only $750,000.

Jim:     Offer $800,000 and make sure you get it.

Wifey: I could finally get a pool boy to look after me like you can’t.

Jim:     Get two, I just want you to be happy.

Wifey: Honey, you’re the best.

Jim:     Anything for you, baby.

I know I should be happy someone found my cell phone but did it have to be Jim.

My constant for Men’s League was playing with Doug Poole.  No matter who would join us they would almost certainly comment on Doug’s sweet fluid swing. It’s true. Doug swings like a young Fred Couples.  Sadly, he hits the ball like an old Doug Poole and has the back of an even older Fred Couples.  Prior to Doug’s recent lay up with a bad back, we had many spirited discussions about hockey, basketball, real or fake and, of course, golf. One day I mentioned that I wasn’t certain that I made the right choice in buying a range finder……..perhaps I should have gotten a GPS.  Taking my range finder, Doug pointed it at the green ahead of us and said“it is 122 yards to Murphy and the pin is just on the other side of him”.  So I asked how far it was to the other side of Murphy and Doug just turned and said “you’re going to need GPS for that”.  For sale, one range finder.

The Week That Was

Last week Pat wrote “Team # 6 was, once again, in top spot for the week with a very impressive 275.  That’s an average of 34.38 shots per player that counted toward the team total!”

Well, this week Team #6 again shot 275 to lead the week and I will trust Pat on the 34.38 shots. Three gross 36’s from Chappy, Chris Gratton and Ian McDonald led the way with a sweet 38 gross by Ron Watson going to Useless Bastard land.  Also, four net 36’s, including my own, failed to count. It should be pointed out that all 17 players played this week for a big team effort.

Now, as a member of Team #6, I want to stop the rumours that Captain John Horan emails other captains telling them that “your feeble skills are no match for the powers of the Dark Side”.  Never happened. It was clearly pointed out to John that it didn’t work out too well for the guy in the movie. Besides, everyone knows that the Dark Side has cookies and John, being on a fixed income, has not provided any cookies to the team. It’s not as if John looks like a guy who ate all the cookies himself.

Continuing their dogged pursuit of top spot, Captain Paul Johnston’s Team #5 came in a very close second with a 279 score which would win most weeks. Great gross scores from Bruce, Andy and Mike Lay along with net scores of 33 by Dave Walker and Wilf Hogeveen went a long way towards another great performance.  Now Paul has taken a lot of abuse but he clearly drafted very well and has motivated his team wonderfully.

The crucial event of the week was a loss by Captain Jeff Barclay’s Team #11.  Team #11 had been hanging tough with only two losses prior to this week and just 20 points out of first place. This loss cost the team 14 points in the standings.

It should be noted that after a rough start Craig Mann’s Team #4 won their third match in a row.  Great comeback effort guys – keep it up.

The Captains

Going into the last week of regular play, Team #6 has a 25 point lead over Team #5, 34 points over Team #11 and 41 points over Randy Moyer’s Team #12 with Captain Jeff Shannon’s Team #7 just another four points back.  No question these Captains did a great job drafting and motivating their teams.  So who is the best Captain?  Don’t forget to consider the captain of Team #1, Lou D’Amato.  I can’t remember where I first met Lou but I do know that he likes a challenge. Anyone can draft to win it all but it takes real drafting skill to try and win Pool B from Day 1.  I mean, Bruce shot 31 and 33 the past two weeks and Lou passed on him.  Genius, pure Pool B genius.  Let’s just hope Team #13 doesn’t spoil the party and boot Team #1 into last spot of Pool A.

The Showdown

Whether it is just a fluke or whether Pat is a scheduling genius, the last week of the schedule has the top four teams playing each other.  Teams #6 and #11 will face off as will Team #5 and Team #12.  The top of the standings could blow wide open or tighten right up based on these results.  It should be a great week coming up and I wish good luck to everyone.

The Money List

Looking at the list it isn’t surprising to see that 12 of the first 13 spots are held by members of Team #6 with John Sharp being the lone non-member meaning he has won many individual items. Recently, John was telling me about his continuing education in The Rules of Golf and offered to test me. I asked if he graded on a curve and he said yes but that it wouldn’t help me given that I’m stupid on a straight line. Thanks John.

Bits and Bites

Some notable individual accomplishments for the week:

  • Dean Braund winning the Rizzo Long Putt AND the closest to the hole on #8.
  • Dino Costabile being tight on #3 and I’ll trust he made the putt.
  • Gabriel Kirchberger nailing down the Blue Dog Long Putt.
  • Gary McVicar having a great net 29 and the list shows several net 30’s as well. Check them out.
  • Jack Wratten with another gross 34.
  • Ryan Greenfield, Neil Higgins, Nate Lockey and Randy Novak all came in with gross 35’s. Well done guys.
  • Don Murphy winning the closest to the hole on #7. Easier to mention this than hear about it if I don’t.

A Few Scores Worthy Of Mention

  • Mike DeAngelis with a gross 36.
  • 12 handicapper and B Flighter Don Angevine with a gross 37. (Club C must be near)
  • Bill Howden who lipped out on nine and settled for a gross 40.
  • Maurice Lesperance who shot his third straight good score after a bit of a struggle.
  • Bob Nicholas with another gross 43 which, from that swing, is pretty impressive.
  • Rob Grinton finishing the front nine in a less than respectable two hours and fifteen minutes.

The Playoffs and Next Week’s Schedule

Pat asked me to go over the playoff details but I see that he was extremely detailed last week so scroll down to see the full details.  Seriously, scroll down now.  It’s the “page down” button over there to the right.  No, your other right Sharpie. Now read it all.  No, not out loud Boomer.  I’ll wait here for you to finish.   Done? Good. Don’t be the idiot who asks if points carryover.

Due to the Canadian Seniors event next week the available tees times don’t start until 1:30 pm and fivesomes are to be expected . No question, there are many morning golfers who may be inconvenienced by this and may not wish to play later on.  I don’t care about that unless you are on Team #6 in which case you damn well better show up.

In Conclusion

Some guys take a fair bit of ripping on the blog. Take Mike Brumaru….please. (Sorry, Pat told me to do some Henny Youngman so I had to go on Wikipedia to see who she was).  Anyway, Mike is really one of the guys at the club that would do anything to help someone out.  Recently, I told Mike that my sixth divorce was soon to be final (you know, the cell phone thing) and that I was going to get a Romanian Mail Order bride as my seventh wife.  Mike took it upon himself to spend considerable time with me and explain all I need to know about the fine Romanian people.  After spending all that time with Mike and hearing all Mike had to say, I am pleased to announce that my Hungarian Mail Order bride will be arriving from Budapest on Monday.

Now go and actually read all the playoff details below ‘cuz I know you didn’t the first time and you will be the one who asks stoopid questions.

Enjoy the Playoffs and Swatfest!

Steve

Very well done Steve! If you golfed as well as you write maybe you wouldn't make your Team's U. B. list each week. Of course it could just be the team you are on cause on my team you'd count every week!
