Better Late Than Never...
Jul 24, 2010 | Posted by Don Murphy
Well, I suppose some of you guys have been checking the site to see the latest weekly verbiage. Sorry it is late but we don't all have the same satirical minds to come up with something like Pat did every week. As well some of us actually have jobs. Pat only works Tuesdays and Thursdays so he has a lot more time to come up with something.
MEDAL PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
First off though I want to talk about the Medal Play Championship on July 31, August 1 and August 2. The Medal Play Championship is another event started by Pat. This event was originally inteneded to celebrate golf at our club - An event for every member when we all come together for a weekend of semi-competitive golf, camaraderie, a drink or two and, maybe, a little wagering thus, the Calcutta.
I'm not sure how many of you know but every other golf course within a 2000 mile radius of Brantford has a medal play event and it's THE event of the season. At other courses there are on-course leader boards, galleries, and waiting lists to get in. A dinner held during the event is generally attended by about 300 people. So far we have about 26 people signed up. Hurray !!! We need your help. Obviously our men’s night participants love competition or we would not get so many out every week. Most of you will be playing all 3 days of the long weekend, most of you drink and everyone bets on something. Please help us grow this event into the premier event of the golf season. If you have not signed up please do so. The sheets are in the Men’s Lounge and there will be flights and prizes for all. (Based on the sign-up so far, it looks like everyone will be getting a Scotty Cameron putter)
As well it has been confirmed by Pat that Mike Weir, Phil Mickelson and David Hearn will not be playing. There is still an outside hope for Tiger Woods but he wants to know what our Waffle Houses are like and get some pictures of waitresses.
Now here it is ............
THE WEEK THAT WAS
I was very impressed with the shot making ability of a few of our members this week. Especially on number 6. When I arrived there the closet to the hole was someone named Blane Schell. Blane’s ball was about 2 inches from the cup. When I received the markers at the end of the night not 1 but 2 other of our golf buddies must have been even closer. First up was Norm General. From the position of Blane’s Ball he must have been about 1 inch away. Not to be outdone Graham Young came in later even closer!! Luckily, the members of the Men's Night Committee are skilled at golf and common sense and we've seen both Norm and Graham swing a club which means we knew there was no way this could be possible. Okay, for you dolts out there, here are a few rules and regulations to follow when playing on Wednesday’s
Hopefully as Forrest Gump once said “that’s all I have to say about that”
I was looking at the Standings for the year and found it interesting to see the names of the first 4 captains. When we try to get captains at the beginning of the year it is very hard. A lot of people are scared, feel that it would interrupt their stellar golf games, alienate themselves from their friends etc. It was refreshing to see two new captains, Jeff Shannon and Paul Johnson, doing stellar jobs. I know most people know Paul Johnson as he plays daily and is on the board but who the hell had heard of Jeff Shannon before this year. I had Jeff on my team the last time I won the championship (only Captain to win 2 in a row by the way) but did not know him at all. As a matter of fact I knew his wife better than I knew him. Now before you guys start thinking some unhealthy thoughts it is only because I played a match with Jeff one year. I got to know his wife better than him that day because she basically told me their whole story, marriage, kids, where they live etc while Jeff was doing his pre shot routine on the first hole. I know you guys who play with him regularly know what I am talking about.
It was also great to see the top 2 teams being captained being lead by returnees John Horan and Jeff Barclay. Although both have very limited talent they sure did a fine job picking their teams and are doing way better than last year.
On a personal note it seems that my dream season is coming to a end with my brutal 44 this week on the front nine. At one point I was actually on the leaderboard for both Low Net and Low Gross. Now I seem to be falling off the low gross side. At least I am finishing my rounds though and not DNF’ing to keep my average down and costing my team. Let's ttake it easy on the DNF's okay... it was never intended as a Good Intention Point or for a way out of posting a crappy score. Play it out and put your score in. It's the right thing to do.
Pat used to make a joke about me. He said it was tough to know what I might shoot because I had'nt played since the day before. How about Horan? 2 rounds a day, 80 to 100 shots, carrying an 80 lb bag with over 100 balls in it. 12 advil and 6 ginger ales ---- priceless. John never knows how he's going to play as it was only 4 hours since his last game.
As for Barclay, or as we call him, the Polish prince. He did not have very much time to review the stats from last year due to a heavy schedule that kept him in Poland for a couple of weeks for work. I think he found the secret to his success here. Not thinking.
It looks like it is going to be down to the wire this year as no team is making a so called “Murphy March“ to the finish. It should get very exciting
IMPORTANT - We have Men's Night on July 28th and then we'll skip a week (August 4th) to celebrate the greens aerificaion. Men's Night will continue on Wednesday August 11th. The Playoffs begin August 25th so every score, every point and every shot is important from here on in. Not that all that stuff hasn't been important for the last two and a half months be I'm trying to build to some drama here.
Well boys that is it for this week,
Murph

Reg's Ramblings - Part II
Jul 15, 2010 | Posted by Reg Madison
How can this be? Beautiful day, sunshine, hot, not too humid but certainly not a busy day on the course. Just 191 performers (okay 100 performers and 91 useless bastards) on a gorgeous day. I haven't seen such disappointing attendance since the last 19 AGM's at the club but... what a day! Team # 2 led by yours truly finally led the pack with an outstanding eight under par 280 just eking out top spot by one shot over Team #8. So, we made some money and I had the distinction of being low captain of the night with a net 31. (Eat your heart out Jeff Barclay, your 33 just wasn't good enough) Until late in the evening, I was also the low sandbagger until Michael Uvanile posted his 30 and Henry Doherty and Gabe Gasbarrini joined me with 31's. Oh well, the Team victory was the important thing!!
President Bob Herron had the low gross for the day with 35 but you probably knew something was up when Bob was still in the lounge after dark. At even par were Nate Lockey, Michael Uvanile and Henry Doherty. Bruce, I guess you owe these guys a drink! Bruce did finish his round this week didn't he? I forgot to check. You never know when a guy might have to DNF because of the lousy weather conditions we've had the last two weeks.
But the story of the day has to be the Polish Prince, Ray Bednarz. I had the pleasure (???) of playing with past president Ray who shocked the world with a cunning 13 on the first hole. Was he trying to shoot his age on the front nine? Well, almost - he ended up with 60 for a net 47 to capture the coveted Most Useless Bastard title for the day. Joe McPherson, who was sitting atop the Most Useless category until the Ray came in was the possessor of an almost equally horrid net of 46. I guess he had his prayers answered. Well, at least one of them... God only knows the laundry list of prayers that poor bastard must offer up every night.
Basking in the glory of the moment, I was joined by fellow captains D'Amato and Shannon when Ray left for home to slash his wrists. Rumour has it he missed short and right on that too nearly cutting off his Polish Sausage in the process which, for those of you keeping score, would have made him equally useless in three disciplines rather than just two. Speaking of useless, Lou's Team #1 is now seventh - 6 points behind us (Team # 2) despite his first draft pick Pat Alpaugh's efforts. Seems like brother John has the edge as we head into the final 4 weeks of round robin competition. But Lou did buy me a drink so he's not so bad after all. And poor Jeff, you could see the stress in his face as he saw us move within 5 points of his Team #7. But he bought a round too!
Now Pat, what happened with your foursome? One of you didn't have a red shirt? And you all shot 37 except for Doctor Dave..... is he never going to improve? Maybe he needs shoulder surgery?
Congratulations to Gregg Moore for "Klosest to the Keg" and joining the end of season trip! There is no truth to the rumour that we will be all travelling in Beetle convertibles! And hats off to John Horan's Team #6 atop the standings. Keep looking over your shoulder John, we're coming!!
And Team #14 and Captain Jack - how is it you can win the club championship, play as well as you do, but draft like a dummy? You guys are 87 points behind Team # 6!!!

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot...
Jul 8, 2010 | Posted by Steve McNalley
When I volunteered to write this week’s edition I was hoping for a little guidance from Pat on what my parameters were. These days Pat is knee deep in lawyers (or as he would say, Dino deep in lawyers) so we weren’t able to discuss what I would write. Seems that Pat is suing Donald Trump for stealing his hairstyle or as Pat calls it "Patscaping".
Now if you want anything in common with The Donald it should be the wallet. This is not lost on our own Donald, Gentleman Extraordinaire, Don Pritlove. This guy has been rolling in dough for years. When you deal with such a bright businessman you have to read the fine print. Recently, I played a little Nassau game with Don. Predictably, I lost. Unable to start my car I wandered into the lounge to pay off my losses. Handing me back my spark plugs, Don leaned across the table, the scent of a freshly baked Krispy Kreme on his breath, and advised me that I had agreed as part of the bet to buy him a drink every Friday, among other things. Among other things? Folks, always read the fine print……. oh, and if you see a bird or the local Starbuck’s owner near Don’s car please chase them away. Turns out Tuesdays are my days to detail Don’s car.
With so many members looking as if they had just completed the Indy 500 on a tricycle it was good to see our impeccably dressed Pro. Every time I see Bruce the first thing that comes to mind is what nice duds Golftown is selling this year.
Joining me this week was John Horan, Captain of Team 6. As John refuses to tire of telling me, he spent a considerable amount of time scouting for the draft to the point of playing two rounds a day. Two good moves John made were drafting a Chiropractor (Mike Feijo) and a Personal Trainer (Ron Mourra). These new members have done a great job for the team. In John’s first Email to his team he told everyone that he had drafted a couple of guys who could help their teammates get through the physical nature of a long season. Imagine John’s dismay the next Wednesday when he saw Mike and Ron in a cart. The Chiropractor with a tight back and the Personal Trainer too tired to walk nine holes. No doubt next year John will draft health care professionals to keep the health care professionals healthy.
On this sweltering hot day when swamp ass and fat men pulling wet underwear out of their butt cheeks was rampant on the course, the Team # 6 and Team # 11 juggernauts continued to run rampant moving to 7 and 1 records. Team # 5, with a 6 and 2 record, is hot on the heels of these teams only a few points back of Team 6 due to their awesome participation levels. Team # 5 is an example of how important participation is to each team. Tied for second place with one less win and only four points back is sweet. Apparently Captain Paul Johnston has threatened to explain the draft process to anyone who doesn’t show up.
For the week, Captain Jeff Shannon’s Team # 7 was the big winner with Teams # 10 and # 12 finishing in a tie close behind. Great showing guys as those were some terrific numbers in the heat.
Nate Lockey and Jim Chapman each put up magnificent gross scores of 33 followed closely by Michael Hurley at 34 and Rob Grinton at 35 with quite a few 36’s and 37’s on the board. How often do you get to shoot 10 shots below the temperature? On the net side, Joe Cohoon put up a great 30 with Rick Oldenburg, Ron Davey and Todd Stanbridge coming in with slick scores of 31.
Looking at the individual awards, the closest to the hole shots on #3 (Alan Iskiw) and #8 (Wilf Hogeveen) were very tight. Now we all know Men’s Night is all about heaping scorn and ridicule on others. The number one question the closest to the hole winners hear is………."did you make the putt?". It might be time to consider adding a notation under the closest to the hole winners showing if they did or didn’t make the putt. That two foot slider just got harder….
Also impressive was the putt Robert Sells made to win the Rizzo Long Putt. It is always good to see Mike and Robert Sells out playing together. Mike has told me that it never goes wrong when a father and son bond together. Mike needs to Google pre-war Iraq.
2010 BRANTFORD INVITATIONAL
I’m not sure if this is the right forum for this but I really wanted to include something about the recent Brantford Invitational. The event was always extremely well run and well supported by the club and its members. I, along with several other BGCC members had the privilege of playing in this year’s version and it was, as expected, very well run. Thanks very much to Jeff Barclay and Bryan Monster for getting this important event back on the schedule. My hope for 2011 is that I get an email asking me to step aside for a more qualified entrant.
Anyway, thanks for reading and bear in mind that Pat is still looking for assistance with the weekly articles. His fellow committee members have done a fine job helping out this year but we owe him a debt of gratitude for this league. It’s nice to see him out playing more often this year even if he has been seen running around screaming "it’s the summer of Pat, the summer of Pat". Clearly, it is important that we get him the help he needs.
Ciao,
Steve
