Welcome to the Men's Night 2012 Season
May 18, 2012 | Posted by Men's League CommitteeDraft PreparationB. G. & C. C. Men’s Night Golf League “A Special 10th Anniversary Celebration” By the time you're reading this many wings, ribs and much beer will have been consumed by a hearty group who have been good enough to stand as your captains for the 2012 season. Through this process they also will have taken time to select a good mixture of aces and sandbaggers to represent their hope of becoming champions for 2012. These captains include our defending champion Jeff Shannon who believes he has what it takes to become a two time champion following in the steps of Don Murphy. Captains returning for the coming season who have their sights fixed on taking down Mr. Shannon include Bruce McKinnon who team was the front runner for most of 2011 before making like the Vancouver Canucks and fading quickly in the playoffs. Also back for a third year is Paul Johnston who has been studying the player stats for months looking to find that magic formula that will allow him to topple Mr. Shannon and his crew. New captains for the coming season include Ed Jakub and Dave Pugh. After finding themselves on teams that floundered near the bottom of the standings all season last year these gentlemen decided to take control of their own destiny and become a captain. Looking to add his own special flair to a team will be another new captain in Bruno Gordon. John Knill heard that Bruno was a captain for 2012 and quickly volunteered to also captain a team lest he tempt fate and be drafted by Bruno. There also has been much discussion around the addition of a Skins Game competition to the Men’s League competition. As I write this close to 40 % of the league participants have taken the leap to participate in this new feature. With different fights being created it should provide all players the opportunity to fairly compete and add to their winnings. As the season progresses feel free to add yourself to this competition by registering with the pro shop for the balance of the season. Again the format will be a $5.00 fee each week you play with the money from each flight being paid in pro shop vouchers for any skins won based on the gross score on each hole for the week. In the event there are no winners in a particular flight the money for that flight will be carried over to the next week increasing the value of any skins the following week. Come next month we will have the early results to see which captains where focused on drafting a contender and those who were focused on getting their fair share of the draught beer being poured around the draft table.

The whole thing started in 2002 when our Golf Captain, Dave Gallant, asked the Men's Golf Committee to establish a Men's Night. Dave felt a golf "league" would help to build a little camaraderie around the club and it might even be good for our Food and Beverage sales. So, in the spring of 2002, a young committee member named Pat Alpaugh volunteered to chair the newly minted, B. G. & C. C. "Men's Night" Committee. The original committee consisted of Pat, Dave Gallant, Don Murphy, Dave Pugh, John Alpaugh and Jeff Snyder but it wasn't actually formed until either right at the end of the inaugural season or the beginning of the next year. No one seems to know for sure. The Men’s League started in July with a blind draw, two-man better ball competition. It’s a little sketchy as to who played that first week but there were about 7 people who showed up… (Pat, Harold Howe, Mike Lay, Don Murphy, Mike Galvin, John Alpaugh and perhaps one other). The clubhouse was under construction so the guy’s gathered at the half-way house after 9-holes and compared score cards or, perhaps more accurately, compared the numbers on the cards. How they managed to pair everyone up when they had an odd number of players was never determined. A few weeks in Mark Kerr, Bill Agoston, Richard Strite and John Alpaugh came on board as the very first sponsors which really made a big difference because now the participants were actually playing for something. It’s somewhat legend now, but truth be told, I think they only agreed to sponsor it because they felt sorry for Pat and Dave Gallant. “If it hadn't been for these four generous members getting involved, Pat says, “we probably wouldn't have stuck with it because we were literally getting 8 - 12 players per week. It was mildly depressing.” The big boost came at the end of the second year when the Men’s League ran the first Swatfest. No one had any idea what it was all about but, in keeping with the fly-by-night spirit of the event, several guys agreed to play. It is believed that 58 of Brantford’s finest came out for the first Swatfest followed by a sing-a-long at the piano that people still talk about. Pat recalls, “I knew we had something when that season was over because there was a very good vibe around the club and there where many more people talking about it”. In 2004 the Men’s League introduced the full-blown team concept, the first Men's Night Team draft, online scoring and, in 2005, the all-important participation bonus was added along with the Live Scoring on the TV. Those additions were big and it led to us reaching a major milestone; the 100 player mark was reached for the first time and the Men's Lounge was noticeably busier on Wednesdays. It was around this time that Alpaugh started the now infamous Men's Night blog which provided a much-needed hub for the league. People logged on to the league website to check the scores but it was Pat's no-holds-barred writing style and unique sense of humour that really made the site popular. Members like Don Murphy, Jeff Snyder, Jim Gillespie, et al were often the good-natured targets of Pat’s postings and the blog quickly became a must-read for everyone involved with Men's Golf. Pat recalls that it was quite common for people to seek him out in order to describe a particularly embarrassing moment that a member had experienced with the hopes that he’d make their failure the focus of his weekly article. He often did. As time went on, Men's Night at the club seemed to take on a life of its own; sponsors like Labatt's, Michael Hurley, Gabe Gasbarinni, Don Pritlove, Lee Munro, Gene Carrafiello, Nick Rizzo (to name just a few) helped create the many on-course prizes we play for today and features like the live scoring and the website meant everyone knew what was going on all the time. A sign-up of 250 players was the norm and we were averaging 190 + players every week. Word of our remarkable success actually traveled outside the club which led to a radio interview on the CHML Golf Show and an article in Fairways Magazine. When I asked Pat what he thinks about it being the 10th Anniversary, he said, “it's hard to believe how far we've come since the beginning but I want everyone to know it was far from just me who made it happen. A lot of good members put their heart and soul into Men’s Night and that’s what made the difference.” Beginning in 2011, a new Men's Night Committee was formed under the watchful eye of John Horan and things continued on as successfully as ever. The Men's Lounge is usually booming on Wednesdays and John, Brad Sinclair, Mike Paling and Dave Burnham appear to have things well underway for the 2012 season, meaning our 10th year anniversary should be bigger and better than ever. So from one ‘Useless Bastard’ to another..... help us celebrate our 10th anniversary with another great season. Be sure to get your name on the sign-up sheet!
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party or… this is the part of the article when we ask for money! Great events don’t just happen by chance. They require a dedicated committee and a compelling format bundled with and an entertaining presentation but perhaps most importantly; great events require great members to support them. Since we began this thing 10 years ago, we’ve been extremely fortunate to have a core group of people who generously offered their help. Thankfully, our list of sponsors has grown almost every year and that support has allowed us to continue to provide the members with a first-class event. Our goal for the 10th year anniversary of this event is to make it bigger and better than ever – more players, more activities, more fun and more prizes. In order to do this we’re unabashedly making a plea to any members who’d like to get involved so we can continue to grow this thing. If you’d like to help or if you have any questions regarding how you can get involved we’d love to hear from you. Please contact either David Burnham (dburnham@tap.net) or John Horan (jhnhoran@rogers.com) to discuss what is available.
Thanks,
Dave Burnham

Naturally, with the opening of the course, thoughts quickly turn to the 10th season of the B. G & C. C. Men’s League. Important: Any male member who has attained the age of 19 is eligible to play. Joining the league is simple; in early April, a sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board located just inside the doors of the Men’s Lounge – all we ask is that you add your name to the sheet to ensure you are included in the draft but for those of you who prefer to register electronically that is available too. You can do so by sending an email to John Horan at (jhnhoran@rogers.com) or by simply advising the Pro Shop of your desire to participate in the League. As most are aware, the league “competition” occurs each Wednesday throughout the summer. Participants are free to play at any time on a Wednesday and with anyone of their choosing. The beauty of the format is that it rewards both performance and participation – you don’t necessarily hurt your team when you don’t play but you definitely help your team when you do play so please don’t be concerned if you can’t play every week! Sure we have a few guys who play every week but many, many of the participants are simply unable to make that commitment but – and this is important – every player who signs up is important and valuable to their team. All we ask is that you play as often as your schedule permits. The more you play the better it is for you and your team. There are many, many features that make the Men’s League the most participated event at the club but, beginning this season, we’re adding a new feature that should make it even better. Starting in 2012, we’re adding a weekly Skins competition. Men’s League player’s are not required to participate in the Skins competition but we’re hoping everyone will get in the spirit and give it a try this year. The Skins competition will be flighted based on gross scores so everyone will have an equal opportunity to win - you will only be competing against players with a similar Men’s League handicap. The Committee has yet to finalize the number of flights and the flight ranges but rest assured we will make it as fair and equitable as possible. The weekly fee for the Skins competition will be $5.00 and all money won will be awarded as a credit in the Pro Shop. If there is no winner in a particular flight there will be a “carry-over” meaning the entire Skin’s pot will be added to the following week’s prize pot thus significantly increasing the value of any Skins won in that fight the next week. If you choose to register for the Skins competition the fee will be billed along with the regular weekly Men’s League fee. We are confident this new addition to the league will enhance what is already a great day because, as with all of the individual and team scoring, the winners of the Skins and their current value will be updated many, many times throughout the day. Be sure to get in on this exciting new feature of the league when you register to be a participant for 2012.
2012 Men’s League Opening Day Keep your ear to the ground as details will be provided in the near future regarding our opening day for the 2012 Men’s League. The date is Wednesday May 16th so please be sure to mark it on your golf calendar. The Team Competition commences the following week on Wednesday May 23rd. The Committee is very excited to take this very successful league into its second decade. If you have any suggestions or questions with regard to your league or the new Skins competition we’d love to hear from you. Please contact a member of your 2012 Men’s League Committee, John Horan, David Burnham (dburnham@tap.net), Mike Paling (mikepaling@golden.net)and Brad Sinclair (bsinclair@millards.com).

The captain of the winning team #7 in 2011, Jeff Shannon, is hard at work hoping to prove his victory was no fluke. Also confirmed is that the fearless leader of Team # 1 from 2011 Bruce McKinnon is back to challenge and looking to recover from his team’s monumental collapse from last season. As with the famous race between the Hare and the Turtle, Bruce’s team started strong but seemed to lose their way as the season wound down. Their impressive 7 – 0 start was followed by an embarrassing 4 – 7 finish. Despite their late-season free fall, Team # 1 did manage to hang on to their place at the top of the standings but, as is often the case with sport, their true character (or lack thereof) was revealed once the playoffs got under way. It was during the post season that Mr. Shannon’s Team # 7 inexplicably came to life – miraculously his team was able to overcome Jeff's Schettino-like captaincy and a season-long Gross Scoring Average (44.94) as bloated as his stomach. To this, I say, all hail the Turtle’s that comprised Team # 7! George Bernard Shaw once wrote that “He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches”. Woody Allen took it one step further… "Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym" but when it comes to Men’s Night Golf perhaps no one summed things up more accurately then Mr. Pat Alpaugh who was once overheard to say… “you know, that Murphy is one useless fat bastard”. Where is this going you ask? Well, it was only a matter of time before Murphy realized that being drafted in the 16th round of a 15-round draft was pretty humbling so he offered to lead a team the following year. There is, perhaps, no better way to control your own destiny than to act as a captain. Let’s face it; the aforementioned Murphy was the winning captain in consecutive seasons which is, quite frankly, the finest example of a person who couldn’t “teach” choosing nothing but studs for his gym class. An example… It was during the 2001 season that Captain Murph ended up on the Useless Bastard list a cool 12 out of 15 weeks while maintaining a Net Scoring Average of 39.27 yet his team still finished first for the year. In keeping with the Aesop’s Fable of the opening paragraph; the moral of the story is that if Murph can do it, anyone can do it! The committee provides each captain with a detailed history of every eligible draftee’s performance, participation and league handicap along with enough ribs, wings and beer to satisfy even the most gluttonous bastard. What else is there? If you are interested in contributing to the league by acting as a captain for the 2012 season please contact John Horan (jhnhoran@rogers.com). Registration information will be provided in the near future as no one will want to miss the 10th anniversary season of The Men’s League at Brantford. Keep your ear to the ground as details will be provided in the near future of an Opening Day for the 2012 Men’s League that you will not want to miss. Be sure to mark the date of Wednesday May 16th on your calendar as that will be the day of this event. The Team Competition commences the following week on Wednesday May 23rd. The Committee is very excited to take this very successful league into its second decade. If you have any suggestions or questions with regard to your league do not hesitate to contact a member of your 2012 Men’s League Committee, John Horan, David Burnham at dburnham@tap.net, Mike Paling (mikepaling@golden.net)and Brad Sinclair (bsinclair@millards.com).
