Welcome to the Tuesday Night Women's Golf 2010 Season

Oh the Shame as Mighty Merlot crushes Chianti!

Jul 23, 2010 | Posted by Sherry Paling

I riled up Merlot team (Loretta Madison in particular) to the point their attendance was up and they crushed the Chianti Team.  Grapes are meant to be crushed but not the fine ladies of Chianti.  My understanding is that Linda Bazoian is in mourning i.e. wearing all black and not drinking.  I fear for the club revenues if Linda continues to take the defeat so hard.  Loretta on the other hand has been reported table dancing to celebrate the victory.  The revenue might be a wash after all.

The current standings are:

Merlot with 167 points

Chianti with 150 points

Shiraz with 143 points

Amarone with 126 points

The match-ups for this week are: 1) Merlot vs Amarone   2) Chianti vs Shiraz

Rumor has it that the Amarone team is positioning themselves to make a late season charge to the podium.  Co-captains Carolyn Grinton and Josie Heath are rallying the troops, have done their calculations, recruited a couple of new members to their team: Elsa Nezoil and Norma Lowry, and are counting on the continued contributions of one of the club’s finest ladies, Bea Cranston.

A few things that Amarone should consider:

  • We wish to caution Carolyn and Josie though that just like the NHL there is a salary cap --- you can’t be paying Elsa, Norma and Bea large bonuses to ensure your team success.
  • Jeannie Boniface is on Amarone and has yet to make it out. Lookout teams when “Boom Boom Boniface” arrives!
  • Catherine Swan has counted 5 of the 6 nights she has attended.  Now we all know the only reason Catherine comes out on Tuesday night is to have her meatballs after the game. The team will be in trouble if the menu changes.

Our attendance numbers continue to be strong with July 13thpeaking at 46 ladies out for golf and beverages.  Worthy of note even of some the newbies to the league appear to be hanging around after the game and participating in the social activities.  The evening dinner features have been great and we encourage everyone to stay after the game and enjoy the best part of the league.  Cheryl seems to think it is the golf, while for many of us golf is the necessary “evil” to get to the social/camaraderie aspect.

Okay my apologies, I called one of our newbies Sandra Micucci “Susan” in last week’s blog.  Suck it up buttercup! It was affectionately meant as a compliment – you putt like Susan Robertson and drive like Susan Aubin.  It was an honest mistake.  Given my past minor indiscretions on the blog and the newsletter, an incorrect name is nothing.  Cheryl just let me start blogging mid-season this year with some criteria.  Chris Smith once mentioned at curling that similar to Don Cherry, there should be a five second delay on things coming out of my mouth for filtering purposes.  Good thing Sandra aka “Susan” and I are not the sensitive type.

Ladies, again we ask you to “MIX IT UP” at the tee and play with people you have yet to get a game in with.  Susan aka “Sandra” got stuck with me again last week.  Make a point of playing with someone you have not played with so far this season & please introduce yourself to the newbies.  My work schedule gets me there a little later so everyone stop rushing to get their early to avoid me.  Arrive a little later and you might be pleasantly surprised by whom you get to play with. FYI- there is kegs of beer and bottles of wine in reserve so whenever we finish there will be beverages!

Tues August 3rd is the BIG BREAK EVENT with Carolyn Grinton and me planning a super evening of skilled and non-skilled activities around holes 1, 2, 3, the putting green and the short range.  Co-captains you can run but you cannot hide; we will be asking you to assist in the events.

FYI....I almost always wear black and I have not given up drinking. Kleenex was on sale, so I can still afford beer. We thought we would let another team see what it feels like to be in first place. It is a heavy burden to carry with all the fan fair and accolades each week. We are just taking a breather and expect to be back on top in the near future. And, rumour has it that the members are going to take to wearing name tags so certain bloggers will be sure and give credit (or slander) where it is due. We realize it is harder to remember names as you get older.....

The Merlot Show!

Jul 15, 2010 | Posted by Sherry Paling

Loretta Madison has just had us all fooled for years now.  Leading the Merlot team they have captured the lead with their victory over Shiraz this past week.  Congratulations on your albeit short time on the podium.  In hot pursuit trailing by 4 points is Chianti, 10 points is Shiraz and 40 points is Amarone.

Contributing to the Merlot victory:

Rena Cowell  1 year as a golfer & contributed to her team’s success two of the three nights off the tee

Shannon McMannis in her first season at BGCC & doing her team proud counting each of her 6 nights

Donna Michaels in her first season at BGCC & doing her team proud counting each of the 7 nights played

Judy Nicholas on the links of BGCC for 6 years now

Eileen McIntryre has been a member 16 years & picks this season to peak

And their team Captain Loretta Madison a seasoned veteran who has been on tour 18 years

I suspect that Loretta may have had some of these newer ladies scouted for the Merlot Team and there are some season bonuses or incentives going on.  Loretta, you can have me on your team next year and nobody will accuse you of “stacking”.

Note: I wanted drug testing for performance enhancing substances to be invoked on the Merlot team BUT Cheryl has said I am not allowed to put stuff like that in the BLOG.  Whatever happened to the constitution that guarantee’s me freedom of speech?  Apparently there was a league vote and that freedom is not applicable to the author.

Congrats to the Merlot team again.  Linda Bazoian & Prima Lesperance, as co-captains of the Chianti team has the entire team in training for the match up next week.  Loretta bring your tissues and a note pad to take lessons as Chianti shows the Merlot team a thing or two about the game of golf!

While Merlot and Chianti are squaring off this week, the Amarone team will be taking a run at the Shiraz gang.

Some great things in the works for the”Big Break Event” on Tuesday August 3rd!  For the newbies and others not in the know, the grounds crew will be aerating that day and we will only have limited holes available.  Rather than cancel the evening, as the club cannot sustain the lack of food and beverage revenue :-), we organize a fun evening of skilled, non-skilled and entertaining games on a few holes + the lounge.  There will be a dinner and a modest prize presentation to follow the festivities.  (Dear co-captains, please be prepared to volunteer when I ask you to assist in the event.)

NEW PLAYERS – everyone has to play with Sherry Paling once (Cheryl says so!).  Susan Micucci took her turn/punishment last week and survived it.  Mind you she was one of the last to leave and only after the keg needed to be changed.   Looking forward to getting a game with some of the new members! Let’s all make an effort to mix it up & meet someone new or maybe that you have not played with lately!

Sandra Micucci here. Just wanted to let the other new players know that I had a great time playing with Sherry last week. It wasn't nearly as bad as everyone said it was going to be.

HOT July 6th

Jul 10, 2010 | Posted by Sherry Paling

Tuesday July 6th

It was a hot and humid evening but the weather did not deter the “hardy” or as some would say the “fool hardy”.  The temperature was not the only HOT part of the evening.  That sneaky Merlot team has moved ahead of Chianti in the standings to take second place.  We knew with Loretta Madison leading the Merlot team, that they would be a force to be reckoned with.  Shiraz is in first place but it has been rumored that Debbie Campbell and Sue Josey the Co-Captains for Shiraz and their team are practicing daily to try and stay ahead of Loretta and the mighty Merlot team.

I was there to witness part of the contribution to the success of Merlot team.  Sue Aubin perspiring with the temperature plus having to play with Lynda Sinclair, Barb Forrest and myself was not deterred from the challenge.   Coming off a mediocre score on number 12, she had us lulled into a false sense of security.  Sue casually approached 13 tees, chatting away and pounded a drive well past the 150 yard mark.  Next shot on the green leaving her about a five foot putt.  She approaches the putt and says “this is for birdie”.  I corrected her with “no Sue, this is for an eagle”, thinking the pressure would throw her off.  Not deterred in the slightest, that Tiger Woods focus in her eyes, Sue sunk the EAGLE putt like it was nothing.  For those that know me, “speechless” is not an adjective often used on me but there I stood.  Congrats to Sue!  (An asset to the Merlot Team)

As with the entire season the standings are amazingly close:

Shiraz 125   Merlot 123   Chianti 119   Amarone 97

It looks like it will be the PARTICIPATION factor that will make or break the race for the teams this year.

Heads up .. The rule has been put in place that double par is the maximum on any hole.  Please keep this in mind for pace of play and for scoring purposes.  "Par times two, makes us move!"

If you get a chance be sure to introduce yourself and get a game in on a Tuesday night with some of the new ladies to our league and/or club this year:

Beth Hospodar (Shiraz)- drives like John Daly

Pat Fyffe (Shiraz)- steady up the center

Elsa Neziol (Amarone)- a bunker aficionado

Sandra Micucci (Shiraz)- “rough, what rough”, always on the short stuff

Judy Cardwell (Chianti)- no fear of water

Norma Lowry (Amarone)- pinpoint accuracy

Terri Kilmartin (Merlot)- wicked with the wedges

Welcome ladies and trust that you are enjoying your evenings of golf and the socializing we seem to do so well afterward.

Things to look forward to:

Big Break Event – Tues Aug 3rd a chance for the non-skilled, the skilled and the patio professionals to enjoy themselves

BGCC goes to Galt Country Club- Tues Aug 10th a chance to experience the course and hospitality of Galt Country Club

Galt Country Club comes to Brantford- Tues Aug 24th we reciprocate the hospitality and host our new friends

For Tuesday July 13th below are the team match ups:

Team Merlot vs Team Shiraz    i.e. the first place & second place teams squaring off

Team Chianit vs Team Amarone  i.e. the third & fourth place teams squaring off

Tuesday June 29th .. a cool evening

Jun 30, 2010 | Posted by Sherry Paling

This past Tuesday was cool but comfortable enough and did the ball ever fly when the wind was behind us.  Attendance was down slightly as I understand some of the Women normally in attendance had played in an event at Beverly Golf earlier in the day. Trust they did us proud!

Unlike last year where one team clearly had a runaway lead in the scoring, it remains any teams opportunity to claim the season for their own.  Chianti remains in first place with 109 points, Merlot in second with 105, Shiraz with 104 and Amarone with 91 points.  Demonstrates how well balanced the teams are from a skill perspective and that it will be PARTICIPATION that will be the deciding factor. A fitting way for a league based on the principles of camaraderie on and off the course.

Chianti co-captains Prima Lesperance and Linda Bazoian are worried though.  Sandra Micucci  joined the league and the Shiraz team this past week.  Welcome to Sandra and her attendance will sure to be an asset to the Shiraz team (Co-captains: Sue Josey and Debbie Campbell).  Rumour has it that Sandra is taking lessons weekly from Dave and thoroughly enjoying it.  If you get a chance, just ask her about her lesson plan?

Speaking of Shiraz, did they ever have a hot Tuesday night with the following players contributing to their success:

  • Sue Josey - leading the charge & the last to go home
  • Doreen Johnson – always up the middle
  • Chris Smith – long ball hitter
  • Elaine Johnson – stellar bunker player
  • Marette Lavelle -she better not be using all her good shots on Tues night’s and not saving any for the t-cup matches
  • Teresa Winn – putter was on fire
