Welcome to the Men's League 2009 Season
The "Red Ace" strikes again!Jun 24, 2009 | Posted by adminThis past week brought on a whole new set of challenges. The Game this week was the front 9 “Irons only” from the forward tees. I am like many of you have never even stood on many of these tee blocks, so it was an entirely different look at many of the holes that we play so often. Some struggled through the round, but many of you posted season low rounds. Maybe we all should consider what blocks we play from on a regular basis. Herb Newell proved the forward tees are for him, as he collects the $25.00 ESSO Gift card for the “Closest to the Gas Can” on Hole #9. The best shot of the night was claimed by, John Aird on the par 3 4th hole. This was the ESSO Sponsored “Closet to the Pin” hole. John stood on the tee with a sand wedge in his hand hit his shot deep over the flag and hit the paved cart path. The ball bounced off the path about 12 to 15 feet in the air back onto the green hopped once and rolled into the cup for John's 4th ace so far. With the ace John closed out Lowell who was in tight about 6 inches to the right of the cup. As a side note one of John’s other ace’s came on the very same 4th hole and once again from the forward tee’s, thus proving John is in fact the king of the Red Tees. .
And remember;

Week 4
Jun 18, 2009 | Posted by League Admin
Well after 4 weeks of league play and things are really starting to take shape.
This week we welcomed many new players as we now have 12 teams. At this point Team 10 leads the yearly standings.
The big news this week is Team 9 finally decided to show up to play after three straight loses. This week they stepped up to the plate and went low with a 126 to lead the week.
The big question this week is, just how did some of our low handicappers and solid weekly players end up on the “Useless Bastards” list? You know who you are, so we will not name names...this time!
There are definitely a few teams that are to be reckoned with and a few secret weapons out there as well. Team 6 with their 3 wins may have the biggest secret weapon in their bag of tricks, that being John Robinson. Well John may have ended up on the “Useless Bastard” list more than once this year, John has the magical effect on those who play with him to pull even the best player down to his level. Week after week John’s playing partners crash and burn and post higher than expected numbers. We need to break John's spell on the fellow golfer and go low while playing with him.
Let’s see just what week 5 has in store for us.
Until then keep it in the short grass…
By the way for the week of June 30 come out and

So Far, So Good...

It was a beautiful evening which, not surprisingly, led to a pretty good mob showing up for Men's Night - 65 was the final count. I think the new format that promotes participation and having the scores on the TV is working rather well. The lounge was rocking and I heard Harvey say that he had never seen so many guys hanging around afterwards. Very nice indeed.
Team # 7 continued their unbeaten streak sitting at 3 - 0 where Team # 9, as one observer accurately pointed out, ran into a bit of bad luck when they ended up playing the low team this week, are still looking for their first win. It's no surprise that the teams at the top of the standings are getting really strong participation while the teams at the bottom need to get more players out each week. In this format (which I wholeheartedly endorse) success is based on performance and participation so if you hope to compete you simply have to get the boys out in big numbers.
My game this week was the usual "much ado about nothing" though I did rather enjoy the company. I had the pleasure of playing once again with our General Manager, Mr. Mike Ellis. Mike, as I'm sure you know, is a really good guy, a fellow member of my Team # 9 and, if his scores so far are any indication, a tad, shall we say, inconsistent. I know when you work in the golf business it usually means you don't play much golf but, from what I could see, it's the putter that's been letting Mike down and, believe me, this is one area where I know of what I speak.
We got to chatting as we were standing beside the 5th green and In one of the most dramatic examples of irony I have ever witnessed, Mike actually turned to me and asked me if I noticed anything odd about his putting stroke. Truth be told I think he was just making conversation but I never like to pass up the chance to offer my opinion so I thought about it for a moment and then quietly explained that, "although I am no expert, it appears to me you are experiencing a focal dystonia meaning the pathways that govern the inhibition of competing motor programs break down resulting in the overriding of the original motor program. Two motor programs are operating simultaneously, leading to miss-hit putts, which by the way, is not unlike when Mr. George Costanza voiced his concern that a 'George divided against itself could not stand'. I continued, "In my opinion, the neuroanatomy of the basal ganglia and concomitant neurophysiology are the primary areas of concern. It seems clear to me that stress is causing the release of the activating neurotransmitter glutamate, which in turn causes a release of dopamine in the basal ganglia pathways that may result in the disinhibition of competing motor programs". (I want to stress the word may because as I wrote earlier, I don’t consider myself an expert). This, I told him, could be the reason he hasn't been putting well. Surprisingly, that was the last he spoke to me all day.
Play well and play often,

2009 Men's Night
Apr 3, 2009 | Posted by Men's Night Committee
The idea behind the program is simple... the more you play - the better it is for you and your team. Teams will do battle in a season-long round robin with the winners of each weekly match earning 10 points, 5 points per team if there is a tie and 0 for teams that lose. The most important aspect of the scoring is participation - teams receive 1 point for each participant regardless of their performance as long as they reach the minimum number of players required to post a team score. Those that don't count toward the team total can almost assuredly count on being singled out, ridiculed and suitably labeled a Useless Bastard on both the TV and in this very space. They will, however, earn a valuable participation point and, of course, they can always step it up and count the following week.
One of the high-lights of the program is the actual real-time scoring. As the Pro Shop staff enter scores throughout the day the standings, individual results and Team vs. Team information is updated in real-time on the Internet. Guys who aren't able to play that week or those poor souls stranded at the office until later in the day can log onto the site (www.golfscoring.net/brantvalley) to see how their team is doing. We encourage everyone to save this website address into your "favourites" file. Another bonus is the program actually maintains a separate Men's Night handicap so there is no need to worry about each team being balanced with an equal number of liars, lowlifes, sandbaggers and cheats. That, my friends, is pretty damn good.
The excitement, of course, begins in April/May but we wanted to get the word out early to make sure everyone completely understands the benefits of the new format. The first step is to recruit some enthusiastic, if not qualified, captains so if you would like to head up a team this year please speak with Mike in the golf shop (mellis.brantvalley@golfnorth.ca). Prospective Captains can rest easy; the skills required to effectively head up a team are few so our boys shouldn’t have any difficulty. We might ask you to help balance out the teams (more on that later), play on a regular basis and, because success in this format relies heavily on participation, occasionally rally the troops. Quite simply... the more guys that play... the better it is for the team.
We are very excited about the possibilities of this program and looking forward to a great year. If you have any questions regarding the program please speak to us and please remember to check back here often. There will be periodic updates. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the early spring.
That is all,
Brant Valley Golf Club
