2010 Men's Night Season
May 16, 2010 | Posted by The Committee
Welcome to the 2010 Craigowan Men's Night season. The draft is complete, the teams are organized and official league play begins on Thursday May 20th. Every Captain wants to get off to a good start so please make a point of getting your 9-holes in some time during the day on Thursday in order to support the team.
A question regarding Men's Night handicaps was raised at the draft so we thought this was the perfect time to provide everyone with a brief explanation of how a league handicap is calculated. One of the wonderful features of the scoring system we use is that it calculates a separate league handicap based solely on your Men's Night scores. Neither the golf committee nor the staff in the shop have any influence on handicaps. Most importantly, the "system" should be recognized as an inanimate, unbiased mechanism to track, record, calculate, allocate, tabulate and publish numbers attached to names – nothing more. The triggering device to set it in motion is the input of a player’s score; how many strokes they took to complete 9 holes of golf. The first calculation, with respect to determining a handicap, is to deduct the pre-determined course rating from the player’s score. This "index" or number is the basis for determining a league handicap. League handicaps are determined by taking a players best four scores out of their last seven, adding them together and then dividing by 4. The system then subtracts the league course rating which, in this case, is set at 35. That number is either rounded up or down. Important; Handicaps are calculated using the best four scores out of your last seven rather than the GAO method of the best 10 out of your last 20 because league's usually only play once per week. If the system used the best 10 out of your last 20 method it would take far too long for handicaps to change.
Here is an example...
Terry Thompson
Terry's last 7 scores for 2009 were 41, 41, 43, 43, 42, 44 and 37. His four best scores are 41, 41, 42 and 37 which, when we add them together, equal 161. The system divides 161 by 4 to get 40.25 and then subtracts the course rating (35) to get 5.25 The system either rounds up or down so Terry's league handicap for his next round will be 5. Like your regular GAO handicap, your Men's Night handicap carries forward from year to year.
Let's hope for some good golf, good weather and good fellowship,
The Committee
