Welcome to the Men's League 2007 Season

If you build it they will come

Once again the season has come to an end and from all accounts it has been another great success. I would like to start by thanking all of our sponsors for their support all season, the Frisina group, Ralph,Al and Dan, Royal LePage, Mike Pompeani and Doug Tunis, Rockett lumber,Glen Law and Halton Honda, without their support we would not be able to achieve half the things we do. To the pro shop and all in it ,a great job well done and last but not least Mr Gary Milani, a very time consuming and thankless job.Thank you all. Now if I can just teach Gary how to pick a team he might be ok for next year.

Now for the playoffs. This year we set them up in a different format than last year and we think this worked out very nicely ,with only 8 points separating the top 4 going into the last match and only 1 point at the end separating 1st and 2nd; although Joe Mastroianni did try to phone Brent Davey at 10pm in a pathetic effort to get him to tee off and gain him another point, so sad Joe ,"not in the spirit of the game "as someone once told me!

Finally, to all players who played this year ,thank you .This league is not about good players, bad players, young or old players, it is about participation .Not whether you shot 35 or 55 but did you beat your buddy's team and are you going to let him know about it,I love to hear all the great stories and hard luck adventures.Lets keep it going and get bigger & better year after year.

See you all at Swatfest

When will it all end

When will it all end, was the cry from masses. Well, if Milani thinks he can keep it going until he gets his team into the money, we are all going to be here for a long, long time. Get your winter gear ready .

Yet another hole in one, well done Shawn. You know that this is just killing Gary, at this rate, there is going to be no money left for his Cayman Island fund, he may have to go back to work.I should mention that Scott (poopy pants) Bell also had a hole in one, on number 15. Shawn gets$862, Scott gets$0, sorry Scott, just the wrong hole buddy.Hey ,I should talk, I'll take my first on any hole.

Next week should be the last, with the Swatfest after that. The rampage is set to begin, a night of near misses and a lot of stupidity.Remember, try and keep your ball in play, please refrain from using other players on the fairway as target practice, I know some of them make good targets, but we may need them next year.

The winners of the Swatfest will have a gala held in their name, in other words, the end of season meal to follow the Swatfest. We will also announce the final winners and the draw winners for the Molson bus trip.

So lets go get your game face on, its all to play for, and for crying out loud try NOT to make any more holes in one or Gary will end up in Chedoke psychiatric ward and I still need him.

Happy Trails

Surviving Week # 1

Well, as we get ready to play the second week of the Tuesday Men’ League, I have some interesting observations to pass along. After a successful draft of 141 players on May 27, league play started just two days later. It was obvious very quickly which captain’s did the best job of drafting players. The Bald Eagles placed first on Tuesday and The Presidents Men placed second. It should be noted that the Bald Eagles with John Galassi as captain, were picked not by John but were in fact picked by Gene the Machine in John’s absence. The Bald Eagle won the first week without the help of their absentee captain which should be a hint to the team as a future strategy.

The Presidents Men, who finished second, were also not picked by their captain, Scott Stirling but instead by Ian Thompson. If this pattern continues look for the Irish Rovers to finish in the money next week, as Ian Clark’s team was picked by Mike Sebrosky.

Obviously it’s very important who picks your team if you are a captain and not available for the draft. Last year I was not available at draft time and I continue to thank Joe Mastroianni for picking my team which ended the year in last place.

The first week of play saw 107 players showing up to play which was a great turnout for the first week. There has been 6 new players added to the league since the draft; bring 7 of the 10 teams to 15 players and 3 teams with 14 players.

As Murphy’s Law goes we had our first Hole-In-One, on hole, #2 in over three years of league play.  Naturally, we had just changed the format.  As they say, "timing is everything," sorry Rick... but congratulations anyway.

Although there were a couple of minor glitches, the live scoring on the new TV seemed to generate some interesting discussions.  Thanks to the Pro Shop Staff for doing a great job entering the scores as they came in.

Some Important Things To Remember

Check in with the Pro Shop before heading out to play. Your first 9 hole’s of play on Tuesday’s counts for the league. You must play with another league member. Turn your cards in with players last names indicated. If you decide to continue and play the back 9 pleae leave your cards in the box at the tenth tee.  The Professional staff will pick up the cards and enter the scores into the scoring system.

Maximum Scores to Be Recorded...

0 to 17 handicap  -  Double Bogey

18 and Over  -  Triple Bogey

See you next week,

Welcome to the 2007 Men's League

Welcome everyone to the 2007 Men's League Season

Hopefully you have had a chance to get out to the club by now and you are award that the round robin team competition begins Tuesday May 29.

In our ongoing effort to ensure that each team is loaded with an equal number of sandbaggers, cheats and "useless bastards" we once again held the annual Men's League draft.  This year's version took placed on Sunday May 27.

After a great deal of discussion, the committee reluctantly agreed that players would be listed in alphabetical order so that no one would be embarrassed by the lateness of their selection.  I'm sure Bob Hilson is thankful.

The draft has become a nice tradition and it continues to generate a fair amount of interest from the rank and file.  To even the uninitiated the concept of drafting a team seems simple enough; when it’s your turn, pick somebody good. I would imagine that most of the boys experienced their first lesson in recruitment back in the schoolyard. A couple of guys would stand out front and unapologetically pick people based on their apparent ability.  It was direct, brutally honest and because there was no hiding exactly who was chosen last - for guys like John Pyett and Carlos Alfonso - it must have been tough.  Things really aren’t that much different when choosing our Men’s League teams other than our "captains only" policy which was put in place to spare poor John and Carlos the humiliation of once again being the last two guys with their butts up against the backstop.  The only comment I will make is that the known sandbaggers were in big demand and went quickly.  In spite of what you may have heard, no one was traded for a bag of tees and a sleeve of range balls.  A complete listing of the teams, team captains, and your new team names have been posted for your viewing pleasure.

Please note that, after an informal survey at last years Swatfest, the format for the Hole-In-One Fund has been changed.  The Hole-In-One Fund is now spread equally over each of the 3 par 3’s. Each hole will start at $500.00 and will be increased in direct proportion to our ineptitude.  The more we miss... the higher it goes.  Based on previous year's performances, the committee has taken the liberty or ordering more numbers.

The big news is the installation of TV which was provided by the Men’s League members.  We now have the ability to broadcast live scoring on the large screen TV throughout the day.  It should be very entertaining.

Last, but not least, make sure you register with the Pro Shop before teeing off and be sure to play with another league member.

Play well,

Men's League Convener
