Welcome to the Men's Night 2010 Season
2010 Season Comes to a CloseOct 7, 2010 | Posted by Men's Night CommitteeWeek #20 (September 24th) All week the forecast was to repeat the rain that had been a big part of this year's playoffs. Luckily, the skies cleared and the sun came out by the time the shotgun started at 12:30. Depending on which nine you started, the next nine counted for the Men's Night score. The staff tried to ensure all four nines were equal which made some nines significantly harder than they had been on previous Men's Nights. With the wet conditions and a lot of tees further back, it made the courses play long. It was a good thing the 25KM plus winds that had been forecast did not blow in! Otherwise the scores would have been much lower. 231 participated in the Men's Night Closing and, as had occurred several times this year, the team total scores were very close. The Macaws came first with 354 points and the Osprey and Hawks tied for second with 352. Indeed, only 15 points separated first from last. The final standings for the season was in question until the last scores were entered. At the end of a very good season, the Macaws are 2010 Men's Night Champions with the Osprey second and Les Pic Bois third. Each member of the Macaws receives $40.00, each member of the Osprey $30.00 and each member of the Les Pic Bois $20.00. Make sure you check at the pro-shop to get your winnings. The final standings can be found at: www.golfscoring.net/greyhawk/mens/2010/playoffstandings. Congratulations to Pierre Boucher (Macaws), the recipient of the Bill May Award, to Max Humilde (Les Pic Bois) the Net Scoring MVP, to Dan Tapp (Hawks) the Gross Scoring MVP, and to Graham Wright (Osprey) who was given the Most Sportsmanlike Awaard. With everyone who enterred having a chance in the putting contest it took quite a while to get the contest completed. 10 players made it through to the playoffs, and Peter Emery (Macaws), won the Treadmill, very generously donated by Don Robertson (Robertson Rent-All). All the money from the putting contest ($325) was given to the Gloucester Food Cupboard. For the final night there were two 50/50 winners - the Eagles and the Vultures. Over $8,000 in prizes were was given out for the final Men's Night and you did not have to be present to win a prize. Check the side bar to see if you were an on-course prize winner and at the Pro-shop to find out if you won a door prize. What Participation! Total participation for the 2010 Men's Night was 4,325, an average of just over 240 per week for the 18 weeks. Many thanks to all those who participated and made the 2010 season such a success. Thanks also to all the pro-shop staff and to the banquet staff who made every Men's Night run so smoogthly. The tremendous support from all the sponsors (check the sidebar) is much appreciated - we hope you will all be back next year. AMEX Men's Night Team Championship: GreyHawk sent two teams to the 2010 Amex Men's Night Team Championship which took place at Wyndance on October 5th. The teams included Ray Licari and Rob Kerns (Long Drive Winners), Jim Crawford, Dan Tapp, George Shaw, Mike Hopkins, and Chris Joly (Closest to the Pin Shootout Winners) and Graham Wright. Congratulations to Jim Crawford who came second in the nine hole shootout. In the Long Drive Contest, Ray Licari placed 8th with a drive to 261 yards. This was a very good result considering Ray had injured his hamstring playing soccer a few days earlier and the pain was very evident as he hit his drives. Members Closing Event (October 23rd): The Members Closing will be held on Saturday, October 23rd. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the Shot-gun starting at 12:00 noon. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the entertainment will be provided by The FunKtion Prepare to be on the dance floor all night with the smooth soulful vocals, a five-piece horn section and the funky rythms of The Funktion's 12-piece band. The entry fee is $50.00 (members) or $89.00 (guests) which includes golf, dinner and entertainment. The fee for dinner and entertainment only is $50.00. The Registration Deadline is October 12, 2010. To buy tickets or for further details, contact the Pro-shop (613-822-1454) or email ghpro@clublink.ca. Final Thoughts for the Year! Playoff Week #3 - What a Week!
Sep 20, 2010 | Posted by Men's Night Committee
Week #19 (September 16th)
The great weather that had been enjoyed for almost all of the 2010 Regular Men's Night Season has certainly not been part of the playoffs so far.
The thunderstorms and downpour for the first week of the playoffs required a change to the scoring limits so that the results would count. For the second week of the playoffs, although the weather was not great, enough scores were posted to enable the system to record the results.
Regarding the third week of the playoffs, the few that played in the morning, got the benefit of the better conditions. For the vast majority who tee'd off after 1:00 p.m., they had to battle rain that got heavier as the afternoon progressed. It was a measure of the team spirit that is a part of Men's Night that 165 players came out to score for their teams.
Only three teams managed to get at least 20 scores. To ensure the week was not a complete "wash-out", and to repect all those who played through the rain, it was decided to create "ghost players" so that all teams would reach the minimum of 20 scores. This approach did not change to scoreboard for the night but did give some additional participation points to some teams. In view of the circumstances, this was a very equitable solution.
The Macaws placed first for the week with 352 points, the Osprey second with 350 points, and Les Pic Bois third with 341. Placing first resulted in the Macaws getting 156 points for the week, the Opsrey 125 and Les Pic Bois 94. The standings, with one week to go, can be found at: www.golfscoring.net/greyhawk/mens/2010/playoffstandings.
Well done Jim More (Eagles), Robert Wallingford (Osprey), Michael Pyman (Herons), and Ken Bryden (Hawks) who tied for the highest points with 22. The high stableford scorers were Dimos Agraniotis (Vultures), Chris Joly (Macaws), Ken Clark (Macaws), and Thiha Gyi (Hawks), each with 18 points.
Check the side bar, at the Pro-shop or in the Men's Locker Room to see if you won an on-course prize, if you qualified in the Amex Men's Night Team Championship or if a raffle prize from this week or a previous week is waiting for you!
With fewer players in the clubhouse, there was a change to the putting contest. Everyone who gave $2.00 was given a chance to putt. Ryan Little, Ray Licari, Morteza Doroudian, Michael Pymanm and Ian Donnelly made it to the putt-off and, after serveral furher rounds, Ray Licari was the eventual winner of $140.00. There was no 50/50 draw this week.
With fewer pariticipants and many finishing after nine holes, the banquet staff got the buffet going early in the Black Pint Pub. Thanks to Ray Smiley (Eagles) for donating additional prizes, to Ryan, Dany, Jim and the Pro-shop Staff for taking care of the hosting duties and to Brent Anderson and the Banquet Staff for dealing with all of the changes so well. The Pro-shop Staff will be the hosts for the final Men's Night on September 24th
POINTS INCREASE: The points increase by another 25% for the Men's Night Closing on September 24th. For the last week of the playoffs, the maximum number of points available is 195.
A Thought for this Year's Playoffs:

Playoffs Week #2
Sep 12, 2010 | Posted by Men's Night Committee
Week #18 (September 9th)
Although the weather threatened to play a part in the playoffs for the second week in a row, 227 players came our for this week of the playoffs. All teams got at least 20 participants so could post a team score and five teams got the maximum 25 participation points.
The Osprey topped the scoreboard for the week (125 points) and the Macaws second (100 points). The standings, with two weeks to go, can be found at: www.golfscoring.net/greyhawk/mens/2010/playoffstandings.
Dan Tapp (Hawks) got the highest stableford score (19) with Matt Murchison (Hawks), Don Roberston (Herons) and Paul Guerette (Merlikns) tied for second with 18 stableford points. The high points scorer for the night was Larry Pyman (Herons) with 23 points and Duncan Grant (Herons), Paul Sheehan (Osprey), Peter Keon (Eagles), John Landry (Osprey) and Chris Fukusaka (Merlins) tied for second with 22 points.
After two carry-over weeks there was $410.00 up for grabs in the putting contest. Jerry Calver (Hawks) and Ryan Little (Hawks) went to a playoff which it appears Jerry won. The GreyHawk Spies, however, report that Jerry and Ryan struck a deal before the playoff! The 50/50 contest was won by the Herons.

Problems for the First Playoff Week
Sep 5, 2010 | Posted by Men's NIght Committee
Week #17 (September 2nd)
Weather played a big part for the first week of the playoffs and those who got their nine holes in before 4:30 were the lucky ones. Many were forced off the course when the thunderstorms rolled-in around 5:00 p.m. Very heavy rains left the fairways and greens looking more like lakes which persuaded many players to call it a day. Those who had a distance to walk back were drenched by the time they made it the clubhouse. The course did dry-out enough for some players to go out later and to score for their team.
Although 211 did manage to participate for the first week of the playoffs, some teams did not manage to obtain the minimum 20 scores for a team total. The Men's Night scoring system is programmed in such a way that with some teams not scoring the sytem would not post a result for the night. This was not desirable so a decision had to be made. In view of the weather problems and the limitations of the scoring system, the Men's Night Captains Committee agreed to lower the minimum number of scores required from 20 to 17 and that 20 would be the maximum number of participation points.
With the revised numbers in place, the Macaws came first for the night (100 points) and Les Pic Bois second (80 points). The standings with three weeks to go can be found at: www.golfscoring.net/greyhawk/mens/2010/playoffstandings.
D.J. Robertson (Herons) had the highest stableford score with 22, and Dwayne Mercer (Eagles), Dan Tapp (Hawks) and Bob Holmes (Vultures) tied for second with 19 points. Tim Leech (Eagles) had the highest points with 24 points with Gerry Montcalm (Hawks), Duncan Grant (Herons), James Barnes (Macaws), Nat Leal (Macaws) and Ron Scott (Herons) tied for second with 23.
For the second week running there was no winner in the putting contest so $250.00 is carried over to September 9th. Andrew Macmillan won the 50/50 and $280.00.
Check the side bar, at the Pro-shop or in the Men's Locker Room to see if you won an on-course prize, if you qualified in the Amex Men's Night Team Championship or if a raffle prize from this week or a previous week is waiting for you!
Many thanks to Serge Labonte and the Vultures for hosting September 2nd. A great job in getting good participation for the putting contest and the 50/50 in view of the weather problems. The Macaws will be hosting the second playoff week (September 9th).
The Buffet Menu for September 9th ($21.95) is: a Medley of Roasted Butternut and Pepper Squash with Maple Butter and Fresh Thyme, Penne with Oven Dried Prosciutto and Wild Mushrooms in a Sun Dried Tomato Pesto Cream Sauce, Coconut Crusted Tilapia, Grilled Moroccan Chicken, and Roast Beef with a Roasted Garlic Red Wine Jus. The A La Carte Special ($13.95) is a Philly Cheese Steak Pizza.
2010 Men's Night Playoff Format:
SLIGHT CHANGE: The Men's Night Committee has decided that, for the last three weeks of the playoffs, the maximum participation points will be reduced from 30 to 25. The number of scores needed for a team result will remain at 20 as was the case for the regular season. Scoring well will be important for a team to make it to the top.
POINTS INCREASE: As mentioned in last week's blog, the points increase by 25% each week leading up to the Men's Night Championship on September 24th. For the second week of the playoffs, the maximum number of points up for grabs is 125.
Upcoming Event:
Two Person "Best Ball" Championship (September 19th):
The Two Person “Best Ball” Championship will be held on Sunday, September 19th. It will be a Shot-gun at starting at 9:00 am. Note that the starting time is subject to change. The format is a 2 persons Best Ball Rules: Each player on the team plays his or her own golf ball throughout the round, and on each hole the net low score, or "best ball" - of the group serves as the team score.
