How Handicaps are Determined

Aug 25, 2010 | Posted by Eric

Here is some information I found to help people who are confused about how the handicaps are being calculated...

How Are League Handicaps Calculated?

One of the wonderful features of the scoring system we are using is that it calculates a separate league handicap based solely on your league scores.  The staff in the shop have absolutely zero influence on handicaps.  Most importantly, the "system" should be recognized as an inanimate, unbiased mechanism to track, record, calculate, allocate, tabulate and publish numbers attached to names - nothing more.  The triggering device to set it in motion is the input of a player's score; how many strokes they took to complete 9 holes of golf.  The first calculation, with respect to determining a handicap, is to deduct the pre-determined course rating from the player's score.  This "index" or number is the basis for determining a league handicap.  League handicaps are determined by taking a players best four scores out of their last seven, adding them together and then dividing by 4.  The system then subtracts the league course rating which, in our case, is set at 35.   The final number is either rounded up or down.  In the case of players that are new to the league, the program produces three "dummy" scores to establish a handicap for each player.  This reduces the possibility of wild swings in handicaps for the first few weeks until a new player has established a league handicap that is representative of his skill level.

Here is an example...

Jon Smith (New to the league in 2010)

Because Jon was new to the league in 2010 and we didn't know his actual handicap he was set-up in the system with an 18-hole handicap of zero.  Every league handicap is calculated the same way.  The system produces three "dummy" (D) scores to help Jon establish a league handicap.

Jon's scoring history looks like this...  36(D), 36(D), 36(D) plus his actual scores of 45 on July 16th, 51 on July 17th, 55 on July 18th and 44 on July 19th.

Jon's four best scores are 36(D), 36(D), 36(D) and 44 which, when we add them together, equal 152.  The system divides 170 by 4 to get 38 and then subtracts the course rating (35) to get 3.  The system either rounds up or down so Jon's league handicap for his next round will be 3.

Important - once Jon posts his 8th score the "Dummy" scores will gradually disappear from his history and be gone from his scoring history forever. Like his regular GAO handicap, your league handicap will carry forward
from year to year

Thanks Eric, that should help the players better understand how it all works. That makes perfect sense seeing as it will not move as quickly with only a score once a week moving previous highs or lows out. Thanks again for taking the time to find the answers. Play on boys and forget the complaining! :)

What the hell is there to complain about? Tuesday's have never been better. We finally have a little spirit around the place and it gives the guys something to look forward to. I think Davey and the guys in the shop have done a great job this year with the new format. The bottom line guys is that it's the same for every one of us. Let's just play some golf and have some fun.

So we're finally seeing some Comments on the site lately. TMZ is reporting that the real story is The Four Jacks up against The Hacks this week and at stake is Men's Night supremacy!!! That's all that matters. It's nice to see that some guys are finally catching on that participation is the difference maker. Get out and support your team boys!

****News Alert - Rope Hooks win Again ******** Denner your whole team should have DNF beside their name as they never finish a hole anyway. Gimmes are becoming as big as the 40lb muskie thatcher said he caught last weeek with one arm. Just so you know our blind squirrel feduzzi struck again last night. All i can say is your lucky the season is over next week because the baggering ways of your team is over. I think we should keep the same teams next year so that we can have our revenge

Posted by: Feduzzi | Sep 1, 2010 08:40 PM

So just how does one go about getting a DNF? Denner, you ride in a cart...how difficult is it to drive back up to the tee? Simper, I couldn't agree with you more re gimmes...wassup with that? BTW, it was a 40lb large mouth Thatcher caught...As far as Denner's team is concerned, I think DNS is more appropriate...as in Did Not Start.

Here's the thing boyz...jealousy is a bitch...all you guys, Simp, Feduzz, etc. must have green eyes. Has it not come to your attention that the 4 Jacks is actually a team that comes through in the crunch when one of their members is down AND INJURED. That is why you guys will always be SECOND BEST....I'd love to keep the teams the way they are...all that means is that you will be whining again next year as you take second, third and make it your home....'cause first ain't in the cards for you. THE FOUR JACKS REIGN SUPREME...it's almost biblical

Denner - it was very fitting that you received the MUB award for the entire field on the last night. Congratulations to the rest of your team for pulling you through to the final again while you build your handicap for future events. ******Rope Hooks are the mens night overall winners ********** We didn't use the point system to get the right answer.

Hi Guys For all the inquiring minds, yes I broke my arm in a few places biking. No golf for the remainder of the year. See you all next year ...or maybe earlier for a few sympathy beers Good Luck with the rest of the golf season. Phil

What a mens night Aug 10th - the Rope Hooks kicked the you know what out of everyone on track for a fed ex moment at year end. Feduzzi and Tremaine have their game in shape to go well into the high twentys for the rest of the year I think we should draw names for thatcher to carry our bags on mens night - maybe he could learn a few shots from the rope hooks.

Simp...you are such a chirp....although you and your team did win once....we all know that even a blind squirrel will find an acorn now and then. It's sorta like the Titanic, high hopes, lots of talk and then...OOPS! See ya next Tues.

Hey Simmer...even a broken clock is right twice a day!!!

Where are my acorns...? I know I left them somewhere...
