Welcome to the Men's 2009 Season

Season Finale

Oct 8, 2009 | Posted by John Kawiuk

On by far the windiest day of the year we had 85 brave and maybe slightly crazy guys brave the breeze and then later shoot the breeze with some celebrating and others wondering the what if’s and still others wondering what happened. Congratulations to the celebrating Swagger Team. Not only they won the week with the 60 points awarded but also won the year in top spot for Pool A. To think that they didn’t even count for the first week and not to forget that things looked bleak even after four weeks of play. In true leadership fashion Team Captain Geoff Wynne rallied the troops with gusto, which I’m sure had a lot to do with the final outcome. He did exactly what was suggested at the beginning of the season by corresponding by email and any other communication device on a weekly basis. Plus he did a lot of vociferous Swagger this and Swagger that with enthusiasm second to none and created a following that rallied and answered the call. Well done Geoff and well done Swagger team players. A victory well deserved. Big show took second spot for the week and for the year with the Warriors securing third spot for the week and year overall. A grand effort for both of you who had the lead for the longest time but unable to hang on in the end. Pool B realized the biggest upset with the Super Seniors living up to their name and knocking out Smart Ass into a tie for second with the Buddhas. Super Seniors had a secret weapon by the name of Mike Moorcroft who shot a sizzling 34. I understand that the steam kept coming out of his bag for a half hour after his round. Well done Mike and Captain Gary Dallin on the win for the Pool B. did I happen to mention in the past that the only team NOT TO CASH A WINNERS CHEQUE ALL YEAR WAS Smart Ass???? They may want to consider a name change next year.

And finally a congratulations to all participants of the 2009 men’s Night league. Only for your continued support coming out to play, not only in the fair weather, but also making your appearance in the sometimes cold, the wet and this week the hurricane type winds helped make the year fun and successful for all. Looking forward to sharing stories with everyone at our Men’s night closing banquet on October 24th. Reminder to get your tickets prior to October 20th. Prizes will be awarded for all and if you can’t make it and want to have someone get a prize for you then let me know so that I can call that person to the prize table on your behalf. Also the TV draw will take place that night and if you’re not present we will contact you with that announcement.

Congratulation to Geefer and all of Team Swagger on a great year. You guys really stepped it up in the playoffs and pretty much ran away with it. I want to reiterate what many have already said and thank John "Bubbles" Kawiuk for organizing this whole thing all year. What a great job you did John, you have really started something awesome! I look forward to seeing everyone at the closing banquet on the 24th for the last night of something new that John has started. I think following in line with the entire year it will also be a great success.

On behalf of the Disciples I would like to thank John for all the hard work he put in throughout the year. John took over a men's league that had become stagnant over the years and turned it into a weekly event that we all looked forward to playing. I would also like to congratulate Team Swagger and the Super Seniors for their victories in their respective pools but most of all I would like to congratulate all the men's night members as it was you guys who made this year what it was. Well done everyone and see you all on the 24th.

Mr. Kawiuk is a man of uncommon vision and we are truly fortunate to have him at the club... and to think there were guys (like me??) who said John's new idea for Men's Night wouldn't work!!! This was a great year and I know several of the guys are already talking about things for next year. Hip, hip, hooray John... and thanks for everything. Now, if we can just do something about your writing...

Deciding Week

Oct 6, 2009 | Posted by John Kawiuk

Well here it is........the last week for the new format of Men's Night at Hidden Lake. In Pool A it’s anyone’s guess what will happen as the top four teams are all within sticking distance of the top prize as first place points this week is a colossal 60 points and fifth place a show up 4 points. Should Swagger come in fifth this week and one of the other top four make first place the line up would shuffle faster than the cards in Las Vegas. The way they’re chirping they believe it to be a slam dunk. This Wednesday’s weather is a forecast that is less than favorable so the scores will be all over the map. It’s going to be very interesting. In Pool B the same is possible as there are teams will within striking distance. Smart Ass may think they are comfortable however an upset is well within realization.

Scoring will be preformed differently than in previous weeks. In the past scores were posted as received with some teams not having results till later in the day. The last day the posting will be done as follows. One score from each team needs to be received before the posting starts. So in other words the first scores you’ll see will be one player from each team. When a score from each team is accumulated for the second posting they will then be posted. This format will continue till we have five (5) scores for each team. At that point posting will be suspended till all players are in from the course and in the patio room to watch live the final results. Should be exciting so see you there or if you can’t make it watch the results unfold from your PC.

Men’s Night Banquet

As most of you are now aware the Closing Banquet will be on SATURDAY October 24th with Cocktails and Social at 6:00 PM and Dinner at 7:30 PM sharp. As you are also aware your spouse is welcome to attend. The cost for spouse is $35.00 which includes tax and gratuity. This is an excellent value for the dinner that is served up to us from Nick and Janice. When I came up with idea I first asked a sampling of men’s night members and received an overwhelming POSITIVE response with only one person who did not like the idea. Since the announcement I’ve received only two additional not in favor responses and a great many “Good Idea” comments. We’ll go with the majority and see how it goes. I did have one concern that it would be too rowdy for the ladies. I can’t imagine any of our member’s who would conduct themselves in less than a gentleman’s’ manner however we do have options in that event so not to worry.

Tickets for member’s can be picked up at the Pro Shop starting Wednesday October 7th and Tickets for Spouses can be purchased at the Pro Shop also.

As we have a larger group of men’s night members with the addition of a great many of spouses the planning of this event is more difficult. Since Nick and Janice are giving us such a good rate on the dinner it would be unfair to them to cause them undue losses. They need to purchase enough to serve all attending and for obvious reasons will not have a lot left over. If you are planning to mark your calendar and attend then please do however the cut off for tickets for Member’s and ticket’s for Spouses will be October 20th. Anyone not having a ticket can not get in as only the number of tickets issued will be set up for dinner. All Member’s get a prize and we’ll have people present to pick a prize from the table for you or if your not going to attend then let me know if you wish to designate someone to pick a prize for you. Thank You for your understanding.

TV DRAW

The draw for the TV will take place on the 24th and you do not have to be present to win. You do need to have the required number of rounds played with is 70% of the rounds played. A ticket will be entered for each round played.

I would like to take this time to say thank you to John Kawiuk for a wonderful season with this new format. It was a lot of fun, even if it wasn't profitable. It always fascinates me how much work goes into this many people having so much fun. Congrats to John for a wonderful if, sometimes thankless, job. You have done a great job. Looking forward to next year. Thanks on behalf of my whole team.

Two To Go

Sep 25, 2009 | Posted by John Kawiuk

Just as I said last week did happen. Major changes in the week based on where teams finished for the week. Warriors dropped like a ball short of the 14th new and the Wolves moved up two spots into contention. Has anyone noticed Big Show slowly moving up in standings slow and steady and now in definite striking distance? Pool B is not as exciting with Smart Ass holding onto 1st  however still anyone’s game as the points awarded increase again next week. Next two weeks will be very interesting.

On a personal note looks like More Beer could have used me to at least finish 4th or even possibly 3rd however I’m just having too much fun. Today as I’m roaring down through the dessert of Monument Valley on a ribbon of road that disappears into the horizon as a pin point with only a few puffy white clouds in a blue sky and with throaty roar of 1668 cc’s under me I turned on the CD that Dennis Venning gave me and turned up the sounds of Born To be Wild. Amazing!!!!!

On a somber note we all lost a good friend last week way before his time. Jimmy Kemp who always had a kind word for all was taken from us. Why is it that the good always leave us young? Jimmy will be remembered for the friend and the good person he was. May God have a special place for our friend.

Jimmy will always be remembered. I have known Jimmy since I was a yogie in the back shop and he was always the member that would take some time out of his day to speak with you. I still remember his Mizuno golf bag and clubs, and I think this is why I may be playing Mizuno. My last moment with Jimmy was him teaching me to hit low knock down 4-irons to about 180 yards. His swing was so smooth and this shot will never be accomplished with my swing. I will remind myself to try and practice this shot in memory of Jimmy. Another moment I had with Jimmy was earlier this year when he was so upset we would not being playing skins on Men's night. He loved this part of men's night and I think in honour of it we should arrange a skins tournament in his name. Jimmy, if you are listening, I promise to hit that low knock down 4-iron for you next year. You will always be in our thoughts and back swings.....

Sweetness you wrote a great tribute to Jimmy...Thelast time I played with Jimmy he asked me who taught me the knock down irons...I told him a went to the Geefer Golf Academy so I could hit em just like him...Jimmy just smiled ear to ear!!! Jimmy was always fun and had a nice thing or two to say about your golf game...He loved seeing anyone pull a Stanley out of his bag...Jimmy will always be remebered as a Men's Night icon...always sitting in the patio room after laughing and smiling...I bet he has laready played a few rounds up there!

Interesting

If you did not notice the point spread is getting close. With three weeks to go the difference in Pool A between first and fourth is only 45 points and in Pool B the difference between first and fourth is only 35 points!!!!!! Now hang on to your hats everyone as the first place earnings next Wednesday is a cool 37 HUGE points to grab. I can see some shuffling of spots if some upsets occur.  Keep in Mind that the points for a first place finish on our last day, October 7th will be 60 point grab. They’ll be tears and cheers that night so I’d plan on being in the Patio room to watch the drama unfold. I’m planning a special data entry of scores for that grand climax night just to keep everyone on the edge of their seats. Final scores will be entered after everyone is in from their round just so no one will miss the high point.

Pool A saw the Warriors slip from a 8 point spread to a 18 point margin for first place. Last week Big Show and Wolves were tied and Big Show made their move by moving into 3rd alone with Wolves dropping into last place. Dream Team moved up into 4th with first place earnings of 29points. Will they keep climbing??? With only 45 points behind anything is possible.

Pool B did not exchange any spots in the lineup however Buddhas lost some ground with a 4th place finish and More Beer closed the gap to striking distance with a 2nd place point grab.

It’s anyone’s game to win or lose so get out there and play to earn every point you can get. The prizes are worth the effort and the bragging rights carry on for a whole year.
