Welcome to the Men's 2010 Season

We have Winners

Oct 8, 2010 | Posted by John Kawiuk

The final day for the season couldn’t have had a better finish. Right down to the wire and only three strokes determined the winner for 2010. A Few Good Men managed to get those 3 strokes and win the season. On a special note that team came out in full force many times and ended up with 18 participation points in the playoffs alone. That combined with the extra 27 participation points for the regular season gave them 45 points more than any other team. When you look at the second place team finishing only 14 points behind......................that’s significant. Is there a message in there somewhere that participation is important regardless of how one plays?

Pool B has a champion also with the Gunners coming out on top. Some of those team members are particularly happy as they will receive their first cheque in two years. I was starting to re examine what needed to be changed to make sure everyone has a winning cheque. Based on the scores it just will have to be Play Better.

Ed Dipelino wins the week and $50.00 with a gross 37

Sandy Goodwin, Brian McCann, Steve Oliver and Pierre Alexander win the Calloway balls

Jim Kenesky wins the 50/50 and $75.00

See you all Next Year

Notice to all......Comments can be deleted!!!! I'm almost certain Mr Harper is not interested in our Men's Night and if he is we need a new Prime Minister

A Few Good Men's Ron Mullins should be commended for his constant leadership and encouragement to have each and every team member out each week. Whether A Few Good Men played well each week or not, Ron was also an enthusiastic leader. Gene Roe, the unoffical co-captain also should share the same podium as he was especially supportive of the mid handicappers and was always offering words of encouragement. It was Gene and Ron who kept us positive and we ended up coming from behind with a slim margin win! Pin High was awesome competitors all season wrong and deserve recognition as well. John Kowiak especially deserves a high five for his updates, score accuracy, prize management and comments!!! For those of you who know me, you might be surprised to hear that I was a little over-the-top with enthusiasm myself after our team, A Few Good Men, won the Men's league. Those who stayed late shared with a victory drink on me. My tab was $120 bucks...if only Geefer could have been there! Sorry Geefer!

Great year as always John. Congrats to the winners (all of us) and a big thank you to John K. for all of the work he's put in to make this a great league. It's onlyh fitting that participation made the difference in the end. See you all next year.

I agree with Greg 100%. John, you deserve, and have earned a big THANK YOU from us all !!! Your hard work and dedication made a huge difference to our success. Participation and fun are also key to the success of Men's Night. Have a great "off" season all.

Posting Incorrect score Changes Outcome

Posting Incorrect score Changes Outcome

What appeared a nice second place finish for Swagger turned into a 4thplace finish and o loss of 27 points. How could this be possible? A team Swagger member, no names mentioned but his team mates will call him a smuck, signed a card with the wrong score beside his name and the wrong score beside another players name. After conferring with the Pro’s the decision was made to play by the rules of golf as that is what we have been advocating all year long. The player who had the wrong score attached to his name, which in this case was 7 shots higher, ends up with that score and the player who signed the card ends up with a DQ however in this case I made it a DNF so the team gets a participation point. In this way we protect the field and make the outcome proper as we are only one week from the finish. The outcome was not good for Swagger however a few good men moved up to third gaining and extra 10 points and Walkers Warriors moves into second spot for the week gaining 17 points. The Year to Date standings did not change other than the accumulative points.

The final week next week brings us to the win based solely on who comes in first place for the week. In both Pools the 1stand 2ndplace teams can pull out a win by placing first for the week. Like last year the last scores to be posted on Wednesday night will be for the teams Pin High, A Few Good Men, Gunners and Barstool Prophets. Should be an exciting finish so be sure to watch your computer between 6 Pm and 8 PM for the conclusion.

Ed Dipelino, Rick Adams, Martin Burla and David Sinden win the premium Callaway Balls

Low gross was a tie this week so $50.00 goes to the Low gross next week

Dave Stevens wind the 50/50 and $74.25

Just wanted to send a long distance vote for your League MVP, hands down......Lars Melander, 35.73 gross average- 6 strokes under par for the 2010 season.......WOW. Lars, if you can't see me, I am bowing in honor of your game. If I make it to Florida, I want 5 strokes.... a side:^). Congrats. Honorable mention goes to a threesome, BUDHA, STINGER and Geefer. John, you get my award (thumbs up) for running a fantastic league. All players should be buying you a drink at your season ending party. Maybe I will come up to help drink what you can't.

Congrats to Ron Mullins and the Team of a Few Good men, a very solid year!!? way to get your men out and way to finish... Cheers until next Year... Geefer

Season coming to a close

Season coming to a Close

Only two weeks remain and I’m sounding like a broken record as it’s anyone’s win for the top three in either pool. Lots of points available and upsets are inevitable. A Few Good Men are still ahead with a very small margin however they are fewer men for the rest of the season in Pool A with a missing critical player. Spillers Killers made up some ground and may even deny the Gunners their first cheque in two years.

MEN’S NIGHT CLOSING BANQUET AND AWARDS NIGHT…………………..is on Tuesday October 12th. Plan on arriving at around 6:30 with dinner at 7:00 followed by awards presentation. IMPORTANT THAT THIS IS AN RSVP AND YOU’LL NEED TO SIGN UP AT THE PRO SHOP BY OCTOBER 8TH. PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP IF YOU WILL ATTEND AS WE WILL BE COMMITED TO THE NUMBER OF DINNERS ORDERED.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ATTEND TO RECEIVE A PRIZE AS EVERYONE IS A WIINER. I’m happy to announce that the prize value will be an average of $80.00. If you’re not attending you may provide in advance the name of a member who you would like to designate as your prize chooser. Simply email me in advance the name to hlmn@cogeco.caand I’ll call on that person to choose your prize. Should you not have anyone in mind I’ll have volunteers on hand to put something in a bag for you. Bottom line is I’ll make sure everyone gets a prize.

Jay Schwab, Chuck Lemenchick, Brian Shea and Tony King win the Calloway premium balls.

Sandy Goodwin wins the week with a 33

Bill McCarthy wins the 50/50 and $75.00

Complaints and Criticisms

That’s what we’re talking about……………..INPUT. To improve on the league this is exactly what the Doctor orders so that what others see and feel can be addressed and if necessary changes made to make the experience more enjoyable and rewarding for all. Last week I received a list of six (6) items and let’s look at each one and work on them one at a time.

1) It is unfair that the order of the draw for the teams at the beginning remains the same for all rounds of the draw. I think it is more fair that the order is reversed for every other round.

2) It is unfair that amateurs are playing against pros for money in the low gross section.

3) It is unfair that Lars Melander can shoot 32, and not receive a prize for low gross (other than a drink!).

4) It is unfair that a person who has won a low gross or low net prize is required to continue contributing towards that prize, given that they are unable to win it a second time.

5) It is unfair that high handicappers are forced to put money towards a low gross prize that they have little or no chance of winning.

6) Some allowances should be made so that players are not forced to hole out on every hole. Specifically, the pace of play is adversely affected when players are required to go back and play a second ball because their original ball is lost. Sometimes, there was no reason to play a provisional ball, and the ball may become lost through no fault of the player

Answers to the items

1) Absolutely correct. There are many variations to the method of drafting players for teams. Two years ago I used one method and last year a different one. After working with spreadsheets and doing mock drafting the one that comes out the most even is the reverse draw for every round. That said it’s not perfect as skill is needed on the part of the Captain to bring other variables into consideration. A Captain may forgo the lowest handicap person next on the list and choose someone further alone due to participation. Thus it’s still not the perfect outcome in the end.

2) Pros playing in Men’s Night is a very important part of the experience and they will always be welcome and encouraged to participate. Everyone should be encouraged to play with one of the pros at least once during the season as it can be a learning experience. With the few pros we have and because the rule is you can only win once do not take away from many members winning one of the 25 Low Gross Prizes.

3) Lars Melander had already won his Low Gross for the year and getting a free drink by beating the lowest pro is a separate part of the program. Remember that you only win Low Gross once for the year thus allowing many players the opportunity to win instead of the same ones every week.

4) The Low gross prize actually comes from the portion of your $10.00 that is allocated to the prizes for the year. The amount of that portion is $0.17 (seventeen cents) that means this particular person submitting these items paid $2.04 so far this year. If he plays the last three rounds the total will be $2.55 for the year. A) I will not ask the pro shop to make change for a few of the members who win the Low Gross and B) all the money I raise for the league for the advertising goes back in large part to prize money so the argument could be made that no part of the $10.00 is used for Low Gross.

5) Without using the data in number 4 above to address this item, there is a good point here. Let’s think outside the box and give the high handicappers a shoot at first place. Next year there will be two prizes every week. Low Gross and Low Net. Same conditions apply where you can only win one of the two only once for the season.

6) This one is easy. RCGA rules apply. This is a tournament in the same sense as Club Championship or any of the other tournaments during the year such as the invitational’s, 2 Man Best ball, skins etc. etc. I’ve seen players miss 6 inch putts and if you think you MAY have a lost ball situation……………hit a provisional. This will not change.

Thanks to the submitter of the items. Keep them coming as good changes can come of the submissions.

Three weeks to go and it’s still imposable to see a clear cut winner in either Pool. Pool Points Galore showed a total of only 13 points between 1stand 5thand with that spread anything could have happened. A Few Good Men are still in 1stspot but with their star player away for the next the rest of the year ???????? Pool Close Behind has a new leader Gunners kicking what used to be the first place Spillers Killers into third. That was only because they did not have enough players to count for the week awarding them with zero points for the week. OUCH!!!!

THERE IS A NEWS FLASH ……. Dennis The Dick Venning actually pared the 9thhole for the first time in 21 weeks. Please take a minute and send him a congratulation note. What is the over under on that happening again for the rest of the year??

Brian Fradette, Greg Muir, Dave Penner and Pierre Alexander win the Callaway balls.

Mike Pogar wins the low gross with a 35

John Campbell-Stalker wins the 50/50 and $76.50

John, What an Excellent job you do. We're lucky to have you.

Great work Mr Bubbles on clarifying many suggestions...I was just wondering if there is a witness to Dennis Venning actually putting out on 9 for his PAR??? Hard to beleive he finally pared the treacherous 9th hole...Congratulations to A Few Good Men who continue to ROCK the Golf world with there stellar play...

This is a tournament and no different than any other tournament. Rules of Golf should be followed without the special local rules for double par and any other nonsense. What are some of these people smoking???

I gladly echo Mr. Wonder's thoughts. John has done a tremendous job with our league that last couple of years. It's grown beyond what anyone thought possible and the kibitzing in the clubhouse afterwards is what belonging to a club/league is all about IMHO. I think we need to speak up to make sure things keep improving but let's be sure to recognize the hard work and foresight John has put into this thing. I'm not ashamed to admit that our Men's Night is the hilight of my week.
