Welcome to the Wednesday Twilight Men 2010 Season
May 19, 2010 | Posted by An Anonymous BloggerOpening Day!Well boys it's time to get at it. Official league play begins today so make sure you take the time to get at least 9-holes in. From what I understand how well you play matters, of course, but just showing up and posting a score for the team is extremely important with the new system we're using this year. Now, I can't speak for everyone but I do believe we are onto something good with the real-time scoring on the Internet and the Live Scoring in the lounge. I've heard rumours of Sandbaggers, Worthless Captains and even Useless Bastards so I'm sure it will be right up our alley. I was yakking it up with some of the guys the other day when we got to talking about golf leagues and exactly what the attraction is. Secondly, a few of the less, shall we say, technologically savvy gents, were wondering about the new software based scoring system we're trying for this year's Twilight League. We thought it would be fun for everyone to track their scores and the idea of broadcasting the results in the lounge seemed pretty cool. I'm pleased to say that the comments regarding the new format have been overwhelmingly positive so, for all intents and purposes, it's working. It has always been my position that the primary reason to join a league is the theoretical social benefits one derives from hob-knobbing with your fellow league members. Good golf courses abound today and heaven knows if you consider your membership from simply a "cost per round" perspective it doesn't necessarily make sense. But, not to worry my friends because we have the one thing that non-league players will never have... the security and sense of belonging that comes from being singled out, embarrassed and ridiculed by both your teammates and fellow members! (This by the way is one of the fundamental differences between male and female golfers) It is an inexplicable fact that male golfers feel compelled to root out their teammates shortcomings be they physical, mental or weakness of character. If a member of your team or anyone for that matter, has the yips - you need to know about it and most importantly - you need them to know that you know about it! The typical male league member wouldn't have it any other way. The way I see it... you can be ignored at any one of the several fine golf courses in Ontario but it is only in your local golf league that people care enough to kick you when you're down!
Play well,

Thanks to this unique web based program players can track their individual and team performance and we now have the ability to display live scoring on the club TV's! (I imagine some of our boys will be happier to read that than others!) The idea behind the program is simple... the more you play - the better it is for you and your team. Teams will do battle in a season-long round robin with the winners of each weekly match earning 10 points, 5 points per team if there is a tie and 0 for teams that lose. The most important aspect of the scoring is participation–in addition to the win/tie/loss points, teams receive 1 additional point for each participant regardless of their performance as long as they reach the minimum number of players required to post a team score (six). Our goal is to have 6 teams of 12 players each but we'll adjust things based on the sign-up. Team scores will be determined by the total of the lowest 6 net scores for each team. Those that don't count toward the team total can almost assuredly count on being singled out, ridiculed and suitably labeled as Useless Bastards on both the TV and the league website. They will, however, earn a valuable participation point and, of course, they can always step it up and count the following week. One of the hi-lights of the program is the actual real-time scoring. As the Pro Shop staff enter scores throughout the day the standings, individual results and Team vs. Team information is updated in real-time on the Internet. Players who aren't able to play that week or those poor souls stranded at work until later in the day can log onto the league web site (www.golfscoring.net/lombardglen) to see how their team is doing. Another bonus is the program actually maintains a separate league handicap so you can stop worrying that each team is balanced with an equal number of liars, lowlifes, sandbaggers and cheats... handicaps are automatically updated and applied based solely on your league scores. That, my friends, is pretty good. To really make this work we need some enthusiastic, if not qualified, captains so if you would like to help us out this year please speak with someone in the Golf Shop. Prospectivecaptains can rest easy - the skills required to effectively head up a team are none so most of you should easily fit the bill - we need you to play on a regular basis and, because success in this format relies heavily on participation, you have to rally the troops. Quite simply... the more people who play... the better it is for the team. We are very excited about this program and looking forward to a great year. If you have any questions please speak to one of us in the shop and please remember to check the website often. There will be periodic updates.
Sign-up Sheets are Now Posted!
That is all,
The Committee
