Welcome to the Prestige Country Club 2009 Season
Difficult DNA...Apr 26, 2009 | Posted by The CommitteeWe really had a great turnout this week particularly when you factor in the poor weather. I had a couple of things I needed to clear up with the Pro Shop so I called out to the club and asked how things were looking. His reply, "not to good. It’s about 48 and there’s a 30% chance of a shower". I told him he might have to be more specific... I honestly didn't know if he was referring to the weather or Mike Garside. Either way, I figured it would really kill our participation for the week. I'm pleased to say I was wrong. I'm going to do my best to update the blog as often as possible but I hope you will bear with me if it's not updated every week. My own game was the usual "much ado about nothing" though I did enjoy the company. I played alongside Mr. Dave Burnham and his teammate, Mr. Raymond Turner. As usual Dave was no damn good but I believe Ray ended up in the top 10 low-net scores for the week. I’ve played with Ray before but I’d forgotten just how far he hits the ball. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that he’s pretty much the ideal specimen for almost any sport and I don’t think I’m going too far out on a limb when I say there’s a definite advantage to being tall and lithe when it comes to generating club head speed. That is not to say that a man of contrasting stature can’t enjoy this game or even play it at a high level but, many more times than not, they’re probably giving at least a couple of shots to the field due to some inhospitable DNA. Dave is the perfect case in point… when I see him on the course I’m reminded of a, nattily-attired, Barney Rubble and I’ll bet he comes in at no more than 5’ 8" - regardless of which direction you measure the poor lad. What comes so easily to a full-sized person is obviously a huge struggle for Davey and it was his atrocious net score of 44 that ultimately had me thinking about the inherent disadvantages for a man who appears to have been dealt the 9 - 2 off-suit hole cards of genetics. A tough hand to be sure. One thing’s for sure though, you have to respect Davey’s level of perseverance particularly when you factor in that his chances of succeeding at the game are equivalent to that of a man standing in a bucket while trying to lift himself up by the handle. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m almost certain there is some form of athletic endeavor that favours a man of Dave’s stature but, from what I saw out there this Wednesday, golf ain’t it. I strongly encouraged him to hang in there though… heaven knows I need the material.
See you next week,

2009 Men's Night
Apr 9, 2009 | Posted by The Committee
The idea behind the program is simple... the more you play - the better it is for you and your team. Our goal is to have at least 96 participants this year - 8 teams with 12 players on each team. Teams will do battle in a season-long round robin with the winners of each weekly match earning 10 points, 5 points per team if there is a tie and 0 for teams that lose. The most important aspect of the scoring is participation - teams receive 1 point for each participant regardless of their performance as long as they reach the minimum number of players required to post a team score (six). Presuming that we reach our target number of 96 players - team scores will be comprised of the 2 loss gross scores and the 4 lowest net scores. Those that don't count toward the team total can almost assuredly count on being singled out, ridiculed and suitably labeled a Useless Bastard on both the TV and in this very space. They will, however, earn a valuable participation point and, of course, they can always step it up and count the following week.
One of the high-lights of the program is the actual real-time scoring. As the Pro Shop staff enter scores throughout the day the standings, individual results and Team vs. Team information is updated in real-time on the Internet. Those who can't play one week or if you're stranded at work until later in the day can log onto the site (www.golfscoring.net/prestige) to see how their team is doing. Another bonus is the program actually maintains a separate Men's Night handicap so there is no need to worry about each team being balanced with an equal number of liars, lowlifes, sandbaggers and cheats. That, my friends, is pretty damn good.
The first step is to recruit some enthusiastic, if not qualified, captains so if you would like to head up a team this year please speak with Pat in the golf shop (pat@golfscoring.net) or a member of the Golf Committee. Prospective Captains can rest easy; the skills required to effectively head up a team are few so most of our boys should do just fine. A Captains job is to play on a regular basis and, because success in this format relies heavily on participation, rally their troops. Quite simply... the more guys that play... the better it is for the team.
The committee is excited about the possibilities of this program and we are looking forward to a great year. If you have any questions regarding the program please speak to one of us in the golf shop and please remember to check back here often. There will be periodic updates. Sign-up sheets will be posted soon.
That is all,
The Committee
