Welcome to the Prestige Country Club 2012 Season

Difficult DNA

We really had a great turnout this week particularly when you factor in the poor  weather.  I had a couple of things I needed to clear up with the Pro Shop so I called out to the club and asked how things were looking.  His reply, "not to good.  It’s about 68 and there’s a 30% chance of a shower".   I told him he might have to be more specific...  I honestly didn't know if he was referring to the weather or Terry Ruffell.  Either way, I figured it would really kill our participation for the week.  I'm pleased to say I was wrong.

I'm going to do my best to update the blog as often as possible but I hope you will bear with me if it's not updated every week.  My own game was the usual "much ado about nothing" though I did enjoy the company.  I played alongside Mr. Peter Crichton and the aforementioned, Mr. Ruffell.  As usual Terry was no damn good but I believe Peter ended up in the top 10 low-net scores for the week.  I’ve played with Peter before but I’d forgotten just how far he hits the ball.  I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that he’s pretty much the ideal specimen for almost any sport and I don’t think I’m going too far out on a limb when I say there’s a definite advantage to being tall and lithe when it comes to generating club head speed.  That is not to say that a man of contrasting stature can’t enjoy this game or even play it at a high level but, many more times than not, they’re probably giving at least a couple of shots to the field due to some inhospitable DNA.

Mr. Ruffell is the perfect case in point… when I see him on the course I’m reminded of a, nattily-attired, Barney Rubble and I’ll bet he comes in at no more than 5’ 8" - regardless of which direction you measure the poor lad.  What comes so easily to a full-sized person is obviously a huge struggle for Terry and it was his atrocious net score of 44 that ultimately had me thinking about the inherent disadvantages for a man who appears to have been dealt the 9 - 2 off-suit hole cards of genetics.  A tough hand to be sure.

One thing’s for sure though, you have to respect Jack's level of perseverance particularly when you factor in that his chances of succeeding at the game are equivalent to that of a man standing in a bucket while trying to lift himself up by the handle.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m almost certain there is some form of athletic endeavor that favours a man of Terry’s stature but, from what I saw out there this week, golf ain’t it.  I strongly encouraged him to hang in there though… heaven knows I need the material.

See you next week,
