How it Works

The problem with golf leagues of any significant size is that the manual scoring is overwhelming and no one has any real idea of how they fared until, at best, the next day. With our program the only thing the Professional staff and/or League Convener has to do is enter each players gross score. The program does the rest. It automatically updates the gross and net scores for every player along with the team scores, team standings, who beat the Pro, provides gross and net scoring averages, tracks participation and proficiency ratings and maintains a separate league handicap. Clubs can run their league play using either traditional or Stableford scoring. This information is formatted specifically for broadcast on the club TV's in real-time as well so there is a palpable feel of excitement as the scores are updated. We can even arrange to post pictures of the golf course behind the scores so the presentation on the TV looks great. We still get subscribers who sit and watch the scoring and can't believe what they are seeing. It is quite common for the people who couldn't play or those that played early to come back over to the club so they can have a drink and watch the scores come in.

The scoring is based on team play - a feature we feel is vital for boosting participation. There is no limitation as to the number of teams or the number of players and team scores can be determined by absolutely any combination of gross and net scores. Some clubs go with only net scores, some with 1 gross/3 net, 2 gross/4 net, etc. At my home club, the team scores are determined by the total of the 3 lowest gross scores and the 5 lowest net scores. This format allows for both gross and net players to post their own score while still keeping the focus on the team aspect - a great feature and very rare. You can run your league in either a medal play or match play format although the match play format has proven to be the overwhelming favourite to date. In the match play format teams play a different team each week (round robin) - winning teams earn 10 points, losers 0 and in the case of a tie each team receives 5 points. In addition to the team points the program also awards one participation point for every player who showed up regardless of their performance which allows us to successfully marry competition and participation. This is a wonderful add-on because it compels people to come out and support their team. Naturally, every player wants to count towards their team total but every participant learns very quickly that showing up is what makes the difference. I had one subscriber tell me recently that he loves their new league format because the focus is on participation as well as performance. In his words... "I now feel motivated to go out and do exactly what I always said I wanted to do... play some golf!"

"Hi Pat,

As you know, we wrapped up the league season this past Wednesday. The fact that we had 67 players out on such a miserably cold and windy day in October is a testament to what you've done for our league. Your scoring system was the catalyst for reviving our Wed Men's Night! We've received many positive comments and the guys are already looking forward to expanding it for next year. Great work and thanks."

Bob Hawkins, Co-Convener, Oakville Golf Club.
