Welcome to the Men's Day 2009 Season
CELEBRATION!Sep 17, 2009 | Posted by Ken HundertLast night was a showcase for the Stratford Country Club. It would answer the question, "Why would I join a golf club?" The closing night putt-off, dinner and prize draw invited one hundred and forty male members to join in a putt-off worth $750.00, eat a prime rib dinner and have a chance to win prizes valued at over $4000.00. More importantly the closing men's day was a chance to celebrate the fun that was generated by a lot of male bonding this summer. The humour on the putting green and the fellowship in the dining room could only leave members with positive feelings about this men's season. As a group we had a chance to thank Dave Lee, Dave Laing and Rob Douglas and the rest of the Pro Shop staff for all they did to bring success to Men's Day. We had a chance to thank Mark Walker for his two years of dedication to the position of Captain. He was certainly willing to break through Club paradigms and try anything that would bring success to the member's events. The sponsors of the prizes for Men's Day were also rightfully recognized. There are three story lines tonight. The first is a follow-up to last week as those golfers, living on Devob, colluded to walk off the course after nine holes. This week there was more collusion as the "Devon Street Three" came dressed in red shorts and red caps. John McGraw's shirt was more like a rust colour than red but he tried. I had to rush home after the round to change into a red shirt and opened negotiation with Doug Pinder to pitch a tent on his Devon Street property so I wouldn't be left out again. The pot of gold putt off began at 6:30 pm. The hole chosen was the same as Cathy Murray's $900.00 putt last Thursday. The sun was fading, the temperature was dropping and the pencil was wearing out as an estimated 90 members were called to putt. There were some putts that came very close but the event was ended when Peter Hiller artfully set his on the perfect line. Hi is officially the final pot of gold putter for 2009. Congratulations Peter. The final story centers on the draw for prizes. Most join Men's Day for fun, male bonding and a taste of competition. Prizes are simply a bi-product. This year, entry fees and 50/50 draws generated over $20,000.00 in prizes. Last night there were 49 prizes valued at over $4000.00. Each prize has a value and it will be added to the winner's yearly total. There is a list of yearly winnings posted on the website. There were four grand prizes, each coveted by all in the room. The 1st grand prize chosen by Monty Smith was the plasma television. Second and third prizes chosen were $500.00 gift certificates off of next year's membership. My name and Barry Cameron's name were drawn. Ross Yantzi chose the barbecue as the final grand prize. Finally I personally want to thank all members for supporting Men's Day and helping me to have such a fun year. One final question, with my draw-prize win, will I continue to have to suck up to the Devon Street boys next year? Ken Hundert |

THE WEEK FINALE
Sep 9, 2009 | Posted by Ken Hundert
The highlight from the final Men's Day is the first carryover of the pot-of-gold to the closing dinner. Last season, John Tafts, as the final putter of the season ended any chance for a carryover. This year every team member's name will be put into a draw. Five names, at a time, will be pulled and given a chance to win $750.00. Names will continue to be drawn until a putt falls in the hole. The pot of gold putt off will start at 6:30 pm sharp. Members must be present. Dinner will be served at 7:00 pm. Please let the Pro Shop know if you are or are not attending the closing dinner. Next week Gary Yantzi's team nine team members are welcome to order one complimentary drink per player. Team Nine was the overall season winner of the PGA Draft.
It was the day after Labour Day when the Devon Street three performed their ninth hole shuffle. All season long Rod Hulme and John McGraw played 18 holes with me through all conditions. Myron Rudiak moved onto the street and all of a sudden "The Devon Street Three" could only play nine holes. After being cast aside, I rushed home to check my deodorant and call my real estate agent to investigate what would be involved in a move to join the Devon Street club. It can cause trauma when being dropped by a golf group simply because you might be slightly more flamboyant.
Congratulations go out to team nine for winning Pool A with a total of 94 points and Team 8 for winning Pool B with 97 points. Team 2 finished 2nd in Pool A with 85 points and Team 1 finished 2nd in Pool B with 90 points. Congratulations to Steve Goforth for firing a season low 32 gross score. Many members never scored a 32 for a net total. Paul Shantz, Pat Healey and Dan Fleming all ended the season on high notes with gross scores of 34. Dan Fleming's 34 translated into an incredible 27 net total. At the other end of the continuum, we find Rob Peters with the final most useless bastard score of 46 net.
This is the final time to recognize and say thanks to our sponsors. Jim Thoms tool advantage of Kelsey's generosity on hole #4. John Campbell's shot on hole #8 won him a shirt thanks to Paul Lobsinger. Mark Walker and H. VanMoorsel Insulation make it possible each week for players such as Charles Longston, Glen Armstrong and Owen Zorgdrager to win proximity prizes. Many thanks go out to the Pro Shop staff, Bogey's staff and Team Captain's for helping make the 2009 Men's Day season a success.
Until next year,
Ken Hundert

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO DO-OVERS?
Sep 2, 2009 | Posted by Ken Hundert
This is a golf story spotlighting Mike Gulas. He has been a faithful participant since the beginning of the new Men's Day format. Week after week he heard Dave echoing out other's names. Some members had experienced multiple chances at the pot of gold putt off, but not Mike. There was an optimistic air tonight but it still took a few seconds for reality to sink in after Mike heard "Gulas". With putter in hand he was going to try his best and hope for a little luck. The putt was a good one but did not understand the circumstances of this story and failed to fall into the hole. Mike, not willing to give up, wanted one more attempt at tonite's challenge. With little light, he drained his 'if only" putt. Even though Mike sunk the do-over putt, there will be a carryover of $750.00. Next week will be the last official night to try and grab the cash as John Tafts did last year on the last putt.
Tuesday, September 15th is the date for the closing dinner. All men are asked to indicate whether they will be attending or not. Please fill in the sheet by the computer. If the pot of gold putt is not sunk next week, it will be won on September 15th. At that time Dave will draw from all Men's Day members, five at a time until the putt is sunk.
The second week's playoff results highlighted an amazing low net score of 28 logged in by Miles Tourigny, while Mark Straus and Dave Laing fired low gross scores of 34. The question is, does Dave Lee's 35 translate into playoff beers? Team 2 netted 25 points with a score of 202. It vaulted them into their division lead with 63 points. Team 7 sits in second with 52 points. In Pool B, Team 8 scored 25 points with a score of 198. They find themselves in 2nd place with 54 points behind team 1 with 62 points. Next week's bonus points will be worth even more. A good week could most likely translate into prizes.
This is the last week in the month. Teams picked PGA players on the pre-season men's night. Doug Pinder's Team 10 wins drinks with their August win. Members must identify themselves at the bar next week and mention their team PGA win. Gary Yantzi's Team 9 wins the season total. Members on team 9 may identify themselves at the closing dinner on the 15th as PGA season winers and receive a free drink.
It is a pleasure each week to recognize and say thanks to our sponsors. Harry Farmer took advantage of Kelseys generosity on Hole 4. Mike Maslen's shot on Hole 8 won him a shirt thanks to Paul Lobsinger. Mark walker and H. VanMoorsel Insulation make it possible each week for players such as Steve Goforth, Steve Albasel and Barry Cameron to win proximity prizes. Next week's menu selection will be announced shortly.
Until next week,
Ken Hundert

PLAYOFFS BEGIN - PUTT-OFF CONTINUES TO GROW
Aug 26, 2009 | Posted by Ken Hundert
This week launched our first league play-off. Members from the bottom half of the teams during the season, patiently watched as teams scored and soared above them. Teams in Pool "B" now find the spotlight on them. This week Team 1 sprung out of the blocks with a low score of 205 gaining 20 bonus points. Team 4 shot into 2nd place in Pool "B" with a 207 and 13 bonus points. In Pool "A" Team 7's 204 total grabbed the 20 bonus points, while Team 2 raked in 13 bonus points with a 207 total. Participation points are added to the team bonus points. Please feel free to review the total points that were earned in week one. Each week the bonuses will grow, so Captains get your team members out to play. Team 5 in Pool A and Team 3 in Pool B land on the bottom in week one. Either still has a chance to win their division with positive results in week two and three.
The closing Men's Day dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, September 15th. There is a sign up sheet posted by the handicap computer. The dinner is complimentary (cost comes out of the entry fees). Members are asked to indicate whether or not they will be in attendance. Please indicate either or so that the Banquet staff is prepared. Thanks for signing up.
This week's putt-off, for $500.00, was the last to be held at 8:30. Next week we start putting at 8:15. Tonight, Wayne Rider's putt was headed straight for a hole. Putting a ball towards a wrong hole can ignite some rather robust laughter. Thanks for the levity Wayne. The final putter of the night was John Campbell, winner of the last $500.00 pot. There have been rumours that John closes his eyes when he putts. Last night, his effort stopped three rolls from winning him a 2nd $500.00. It was so dark that closed eyes could be the only explanation for such an accurate putt. Next week the pot-of-gold will payout $625.00 to any member who can sink a putt.
It is a pleasure to recognize and say thanks to our sponsors. Pat Simons took advantage of Kelsey's generosity on hole #4. Ross Yantzi's shot on hole #8 won him a shirt thanks to Paul Lobsinger. Mark Walker and H.VanMoorsel Insulation make it possible each week for players such as Ron Holmes and Ken Delaat to win proximity prizes.
Next week's menu selection will be announced shortly. Next week will also be "Peacock Week". Rob "Landers" Douglas and Dave Lee will pick the member who struts the most colour. Bill Malmo won the prize last year and is ineligible. There will be a drink waiting for the most exuberantly attired individual.
Until next week,
Ken Hundert
