Welcome to the Men's Night 2008 Season

THE FINAL PUTT OF THE SEASON - A WINNER!

Sep 5, 2008 | Posted by Ken Hundert

On the final golf evening in the Tuesday Men's Day season those who could find the practice green in the dark, made their way to watch the final five putters try for $375.00. The putters, after the event finished mentioned they were all distracted by the over-zealous criket population. Henry Kim heard his name called for a third time this season. It points out that winning the pot-of-gold takes more than "luck of the draw". Henry and John McGraw set the stage by placing their efforts within 10 feet of the hole. Monty Smith pulled no punches as his ball tracked for the centre of the cup. Someone must have moved the hole three farther back in the dark. Bill Malmo was determined not to be short (I mentioned he could nothing about his genetics). He, with enthusiasm, hit the back of the hole and bounced out. It was a good thing as the ball, with its speed, probably would have dented Dave Lee's shoes. The Final putter of the season was John Tafts. He must have some connection to bats or owls as he navigated his putt, through the darkness into the hole to crush the dreams of the members that hoped for a putt off next week. Congratulations to our final pot of gold winner, who cashed in for $375.00 on the final putt of the season.

Today marked the end to a season that seemed to rocket by. Last winter when Dave Lee and Mark Walker chaired committee meetings, there was guarded hope for success. All, who helped shape this men's season, could not help but be impressed with the results. The emphasis here focuses on the most important ingredient , which is the participants. Men's Day at the SCC helped to showcase the fact that our members are blessed with positive inter-personal skills, are enthusiastic, love to have fun, can joke around and can even be flexible. The membership is The CLub and Membership helped mould an experiment into a success. We wish to build on this year's start and so we welcome members to make suggestions to Dave for next year.

Today members asked, 'Where's the Beer?' Dave Lee closed out the season with a super 34 shutting the door on the season's beer spout. Congratulations go out to Steve Goforth, Sean Atkinson and Doug Evans who shot low gross scores of 36 from the black tees. Terry Douglas found the blacks incredibly easy as he posted a low net of 29. He was followed by Brian T. Smith, Barry Cameron, PAul Nickel and Doug Evans who posted low net scores of 31. Congratulations to all.

Unfortunately, this week's most useless bastard, Brian Blowes with a net 46, will not have a chance to win most improved player as Terry Douglas did tonite.

Members continue to win prizes each week, thanks to our sponsors. The support of our sponsors was one of the keys to this season's success. Winning Kelsey's closest to hole #4 was Steve Rae. John Campbell was closest to Paul Lobsinger's hole #8 this week. Winning the three 9th Hole proximity prizes were John Campbell, Bill Zehr and Darryl Berg. This week we would like to thank and recognize all of our sponsors for their kind support of our Men's event throughout the the 2008 season.

Until next season,

Ken

Ken: Thanks to you, Dave and your committee. You really did a wonderful job this year. The Men's League was a blast. It's great to see so many of the guys out playing and hanging around afterwards. the best part is that now that we all know how it works it things should be even better next year. J. B.

ONE WEEK LEFT TO SHINE

Aug 28, 2008 | Posted by Ken Hundert

Today the men playing in the Tuesday league experienced one of the best summer days of the season. Labour Day falls on the eve of our final Tuesday event. Next week will be played from the black tees. Tuesday, September 9th will be the closing celebration and dinner. There is now a sign up sheet by the handicap computer. Participants on a Men's Day team are asked to check off whether or not they will be attending. The final, for all men particpating on a team will include a dinner, and up to $6000.00 in prizes. The massive draw will be capped off with three Grand Prizes including a television and two $500.00  credits towards next year's golf membership. Dinner will start at 7:00 pm. I suggest that, members who are not able to attend this evening, slecet an advocate to help choose any prizes.

We all want to thank Bob Jeppeson, Hugh McDonald, Larry Landreth, Ted Hopkinson and Bill Little for allowing the pot of gold to grow to a healthy sum of $375.00. Next week's five lucky putters will close the season. If no ball finds the hole there will be a putt off on Tuesday, Spetember 9th. The putt off will start at 6:30 pm and all Men's Day participants will be in the draw. Groups of 5 will be drawn until one player sinks a putt to grab the $375.00. Members wil then head to the Prime Rib Dinner.

In today's action the weather certainly assisted Brian W. Smith who scored a super 34 on today's front nine. Was this a career low? Unfortunately this shining event will not be recognized with a brew as Dave Lee was not to be found on the Course. David needs help from the Men's Day players as he requires a viable excuse for missing this Tuesday's event (no one believes he was actually in Toronto working???). If you pass any potential excuses on to me, I will be more than willing to utilize them in the next blog. Paul Lobsinger, Mike Gulas and Steve Goforth all would have tested the "Beat the Pro" drink market with excellent 36's.

The sun was not the only bright light on the golf course. Ray Black with his low score of 28 was a beacon for net players around the world.  Paul Nickel and Brian W. Smith were not far behind in the sandbagger category with respective scores of net 30 and net 31. At the other end of the net spectrum was Ed Francis. I golfed with Ed and he is truly deserving of the title, "Most Useless Bastard". His net 44 was only 16 strokes away from the low net. Incredibly, Ed will have a super chance to shine as the most improved golfer next week. This week's winner of most improved golfer was none other than Doug Evans.

Our members continue to win prizes each week, thanks to our sponsors. Winning Kelseys closest to hole #4 was once again Gary Arnstowski. Steve Goforth was closest to PAul Lobsinger's hole #8 this week. Winnning the three 9th hole proximity prizes were Brad Buhrow, Ted Hopkinson and Monty Smith. This week we would like to thank Koalby Ashkanase for all of her hard work on Men's Day this year, she didn't miss a single one. Good luck at Brock University.

Until next week,

Ken

TWO MORE WEEKS LEFT IN TEAM PLAY

Aug 20, 2008 | Posted by Ken Hundert

There are two more weeks left in Men's Day play. The final date for play will be Tuesday, September 2nd. The closing dinner will be held on Tuesday, September 9th. There will be a sign up sheet posted next Tuesday. The final, for all participants on a Men's Day team will include a Prime Rib Dinner and up to $6000.00 in prizes. The massive draw will be capped off with THREE GRAND PRIZES including a television and TWO $500.00 credits towards next year's golf membership. I suggest that members who are not able to attend this evening, select an advocate to help choose any prizes.

Tonight the blog focus shines on Bill Preston. Bill was mentioned a few weeks ago after he won the 50/50. Tonight Dave Lee asked him to pick the lucky 50/50 ticket. No one in the room heard Dave ask Bill to pick his own ticket though. But brash Bill felt that he should be rewarded for the onerous task of drawing a ticket. Of course, Bill picked his own. If Bill wins two 50/50 draws, has he indeed won 100% of one draw?

From personal experience, it's fun to have your name drawn for a pot of gold putt. It was bad luck to draw the number one card. I realized my only hope was to use a colour-coordinated golf ball. Next time I'll choose a ball that travels a foot farther. Other putters included Grant Herndern, John Campbell, Brian T. Smith and Pat Schooley. Is it any wonder that the pot of gold will be $250.00 next week. The pot of gold putting will start at 8:15 next week.

In team play, number nine continues to shine as they boosted their record to eleven wins. Other winning teams were seven, three, four, nine and six. There are prizes awarder each month to the top three teams for the four-week segment.

Bob Woodley has been written up a few times for his most useless bastard exploits. Tonihgt he is written up for his "bagging". Tonight he tied with John Hotson and Ron Holmes with a net 29. Even with this incredible low score, it fell one short of Steve Rae's 28. WOW. At the other end of the success continuum we find Doug Evans who stands alone at the top of the most useless bastard list with a 48 net. Will he be next week's most improved? Will he follow this week's winner, Mike Binns?

Dave Lee was burdened to but 2 drinks this week. Steve Goforth and Brock Gleadall both shot gross scores of 32, two strokes lower than Dave's 34. Excellent golf.

Our members continue to win prizes each week, thanks to our sponsors. Winning Kelsey's closest to hole #4 was Gary Arnstowski. Larry Hofheinz, last week's $1000.00 pot of gold winner was a half a roll away from cashing in on the hole-in-one pot. He was obviously closest to Paul Lobsinger's  hole #8 this week. I'm surprised he would attempt to alienate anymore members with a hole-in-one, one week after his other massive win. Winning the three 9th Hole proximity prizes were Ken Hundert, Doug Evans and Mike Maslen. This week we would like to thank and recognize Top Flite for their kind support of our event.

Until next week,

Ken

LARRY HOFHEINZ PUTTS A HOLE IN THE POT

Aug 13, 2008 | Posted by Ken Hundert

It was the fourth putter in the 8th week of putting that wrestled the money out of the pot of gold. Larry's pace and line were perfect as his ball hit the centre of the cup. Dave Griffith, Ross Snider and Geoff Grimes all showed Larry the line. They also showed Kevin Koch the line, but as the final putter he could not duplicate a one-putt wonder. Next week's pot of gold reverts back to a mere $125.00. Oh yes, Doug Evans was not there when his name was called for yet another chance to win the money. I guess it's true, teachers really do have too much money.

There are three more weeks left in Tuesday Men's Day. Tuesday, September 2nd will be the last night for scoring. Tuesday, September 9th will be the closing banquet. There will be no charge for all men who are a part of a Men's Day team. A sign up sheet for the banquet will be posted. On Septemer 9th winning teams will be announced, there will be a draw for over $6000 in prizes. With each week's participation, you add a chance to win and each time you bought a 50/50 ticket you bought yourself a chance to win in the draw.

Even though team 9 is leading overall in the yearly standings, any team can win the monthly prize with positive four-week results. Teams 9,2,3 and 5 started the month with wins while team 4 and 6 tied.

Players going low this week included Garry Lobsinger, Cam Ward, Mike Maslen and Rick Fry who all carded super gross scores of 35. The net score of 31 was very popular this week and covers Rob Peters, Dave Reeves, Hugh McDonald, Paul Benjamin, Tim Taylor and Frank Nemeth. Dave and staff will figure out who will be weekly prize winners. Talking about successes, Dave Lee was seen in a relief mode as he had only one to buy beer for and that was himself. With a score of 35 he was tied for the low gross. Well done.

Well there are bound to be frustrations and hard-luck moments on the course. None worse than the most useless bastards might have encountered. Mike Binns headed this week's list with a net 47. Ross Snider and John Tafts line up in second place with net 43's. Rumour has it that Ross might have been the most improved golfer in this past weekend's Club Championships. After a first round 96 he battled back and posted a second round score of 80. He might follow this week's most improved golfer, Steve Dunbar.

Our members continue to win prizes each week, thanks to our sponsors. Winning Kelsey's Closest to the Hole on #4 was Rick Fry and closest to the Hole on #8 courtesy of Paul Lobsinger was Frank Mark. Winning the three ninth hole proximity prizes were Ian Garner, Cass Atkinson and Joe Kleinhenz. This week we would like to thank and recognize Labatt's for their kind support of our event. Next week's $125.00 putt-off event menu choice will be a 1/2 Barbequed Chicken with Mashed Potatoes, Mixed Vegetables and Coleslaw.

Until next week,

Ken
