Welcome to the Wednesday Club 2011-2 Season

WEEK 21 - THE END

Sep 29, 2011 | Posted by The Commish

This will be my last BLOG for the season. And it has been a season filled with memorable moments, insults, congratulations, disappointments, thrills, and hopefully FUN. I wrote about AFROS & HATS, THE SCOTS, GOLFING with DALTON, and other assorted subjects too numerous to mention. I’ve poked fun at the USUAL SUSPECTS from PETER to BRIAN to FRASER. I’ve talked about things that never cease to amaze me about this wonderful game called GOLF. And I’ve expressed some of my own personal views either directly or with tongue-in-cheek. But regardless of what I’ve put down here, I sincerely hope you’ve gotten a few laughs out of some of it. That was my intent as is the whole concept behind the WEDNESDAY LEAGUE. It’s all about FUN to me and if somehow I managed to spawn a few chuckles or some involuntary responses to what I’ve penned in here then I’ve accomplished something in my humble opinion.

Yesterday was our closing event and dinner. I think we had 56 guys competing in the SWATFEST. That wasn’t what I had hoped for numbers wise given that it was a relatively nice day. Nevertheless, those that attended had fun or at least I think they did. I know two guys for sure that enjoyed it – GARY BONSTEEL and PAUL INGOLDSBY – our eventual winners. But having witnessed the finale to it all I couldn’t help but observe how bad we amateurs can truly be when faced with a 3 foot putt and money on the line. It was truly pathetic. You’d think the hole was a teenage virgin – never been touched. Come to think of it, watching those slick down hillers on 2 yesterday and how so many slid by the hole by several feet, I have a suggestion to make to all those DADS out there with daughters. Just think SLICK for defense against small round objects.

I don’t know about you guys but that was one great meal yesterday. In fact, I think CHEF PETER has done an excellent job throughout the year in providing us MAN CREATURES with some real substance. MAN and MEAT EH!

So what do you guys think? Was this a good year or what? I think I thanked everyone last night with the exception of our SPONSORS – Ben O’Rourke and Rosetown Central Refrigeration, Doug Thomson and Somerset Graphics, and Donnie Morris and Grant Thornton. So a special mention to them here for their contribution and support.

And now to YOU GUYS – THE WEDNESDAY LEAGUE - a big thanks to you all for your support, your participation, and your enthusiasm. Like I said earlier, this is all about FUN to me. It’s nice to win I know but when all is said and done, the winners will soon  be forgotten but the memories and fun we experienced will hopefully last well into next year and beyond. Because if there is one thing I’ve come to appreciate as we get older is how many more stories we tell about the good old days. Hopefully some of what we experienced this year will make it into the stories we tell hereafter.

Till next year .. Slàinte mhòr agus a h-uile beannachd duibh. (Great health and every good blessing to you)

Who else has more fun than us thanks to you. I was going to ask for updates on winnings but you have posted them all on the bulletin board downstairs. Nice job! Martha will have them all online shortly. Men's Exec missed you last night to applaud you and to confirm your return for next year. Also some serious thoughts on the Swatfest for next year. But worst of all some troubling comments on the honesty and integrity of some rules and ESC scoring violations.

Dave ; great job and I will be back as a sponsor as I think there are probably 200 ads spread all over this course and others. Just a note to captains for next year 3 regular season championship wins for the Heckler. Until next season keep it straight and long. The Heckler

Mr. Commish: What can we say? You've done a great job with the blog and Wednesday Club again this year. I agree with what you've written... if run properly, the golf is secondary. The camaraderie is wonderful and it adds significantly to the value of our membership. Thanks again. Can't wait for next year!

WEEK 20 - SHORT LEGS IN THE RAIN

Sep 22, 2011 | Posted by The Commish

It rained yesterday. It also poured pumpkins all over the course. I’ve never seen so many pumpkins since Halloween 1994.  It was on that year, at the family’s insistence; I was coerced into searching for the perfect orange sphere amongst fields filled with giant odd shaped cultivations most of which resembled something I made in pottery class once – deformed and revolting. Nevertheless, I did find the ideal pumpkin after several attempts to gain the family’s Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.  I brought it home and carved it up into this scary mutation and parked it on the doorstep like a good Dad. Next morning I discovered some little Trick-Or-Treater, who obviously got caught a little short after gulping down a multitude of candy kisses washed down with fruit punch Kool-Aid, decided to use my perfect pumpkin as his personal pottie. Guess my carving job wasn’t as scary as I thought. Or maybe I just forgot to put the lid down.

So with that little Trick-Or-Treater in mind, LAING’S PUMPKINS did much the same to TOWNE’S TEAM yesterday - in other words, they s**t all over them. It wasn’t even close. But you know, when you look at the results one thing becomes abundantly clear, short guys really do play better in the rain. SHINE, SAWCHENKO, SABETTI and HAGGERT all came through. Is it because their short legs are more ideally suited to wet conditions, just like a duck’s or maybe it’s because they get less wet under those big golf umbrellas. In any regard, CONGRATULATIONS to MIKE LAING and the PUMPKINS.

I don’t know what happened to TOWNE yesterday. I think he must have given each of his fellow team members a sip of that SCOTCH he won last week before they all teed off. Trouble is, I drained that bottle the day I found out PETER had won it. What PETER and the rest of his team thought was SCOTCH, was in actual fact PUMPKIN PISS. YOU KNOW IT PETER…… TREAT-OR-TREAT.

I was on the 7th GREEN yesterday afternoon huddled under my umbrella when we heard this giant roar from across the golf course. I said that sounds like a HOLE-IN-ONE roar to me - which didn’t surprise me by the way. I spoke with MARK PRIEUR the other day and requested the tee markers and pin placements be placed in the easiest positions possible on all the PAR 3’s. I really wanted someone to win the HOLE-IN-ONE POOL especially on the last day. So after hearing the roar, I naturally assumed someone had won it. Well as it turned out, BOB WILCOX hit a shot on 3 that everyone in his group assumed was in the hole – it was that close – only to discover it had snuck in behind the flagstick and sat all but 3” from the hole. TOO BAD BOB. But don’t feel too sorry for him, he still walks away with something to show for his efforts, $115.00 worth. Not quite the $4,000 he thought he’d won but something nonetheless.

Yesterday was the last day of competition for the WEDNESDAY LEAGUE. We’ve had 20 weeks of battle in anything from the wet and cold of early May to the blistering heat in July. I don’t know about the rest of you but I’ve had my share of FUN regardless of the weather. We had well over 200 guys sign up for the LEAGUE this year and our average attendance was just under 170 guys per week. The total number of rounds played was 3352. Gentlemen, that is nothing short of fantastic and I want to thank you for both your enthusiasm and participation. Without your support, this would not be possible.

I also want to pay homage to the Captain’s and Fraser and his staff. Their work cannot be appreciated enough. Like everything in life, the WEDNESDAY LEAGUE just doesn’t happen without the efforts of those unsung and inconspicuous individuals behind the scenes. A BIG THANKS to you all.

Finally gentlemen, I want to invite you all out to our CLOSING EVENTTHE SWATFEST next Wednesday. I know some of you can’t make the golf but please come out for the dinner in any case. Your COMMITTEE has come up with a fantastic culinary delight in which to end the season. I can assure you it will be well worth it if not for the food but to get together one last time this year for a few laughs, a couple of libatious concoctions, and maybe a couple of surprises. The MENU and cost is posted above. And for your information, the COMMITTEE does pick up a portion of the cost, so why not take advantage of a good thing. It doesn’t happen that often .. RIGHT?

Till next week .. and as always .. congratulations to all the winners.

GENTLEMEN ..  I want to extend my best wishes to MURRAY WALKER. Murray's wife is in hospital and understandably Murray has not been able to join us of late. We wish her all the best and most assuredly for a speedy recovery. Please let Murray know we are all thinking of him.

WEEK 19 - READING WHILE WATERING THE LAWN

Sep 15, 2011 | Posted by The Commish

Four beers usually do it for me. That’s my capacity. And I’m not talking about my propensity to drink beer. On the contrary, in my life I’ve drank several beers in one sitting and far more than just four. No, I’m talking about my retention capacity because after four beers that’s it. Past that point and I’m either looking for a tree, a bush, a dark alley or that civilized place with the waist high disposal units affixed to the walls.

So there I am last night after four beers with no trees, bushes or alleys around and just those odd shaped white things in which to denote about $20 worth of liquid down a drain to Lord knows where. So with my capacity filled to the limit, downstairs to the dungeon I head.

While in the act of holding my well weathered friend, I look up at a Notice Board which some genius decided would help me pass the time reading innocuous prose while empting those four beers. On the Notice Board was a communication which I read with interest. It described and gave explanation to the reasons our fairways resemble something more aptly suited to goats and sheep than golfers. The more I read, the more irritated I became. It just didn’t seem right to me to be reading about something so important on a bathroom wall. I mean, that’s where guys write juvenile rhymes or phone numbers for a good time. Don’t you think something that important deserves to be posted somewhere other than next to BJ Annie’s phone number.

I’m not sure if MIKE LAING’S TEAM were sleeping the entire season or just lying low setting us all up. Either that or he has a whole lot of ringers who showed up the final 2 weeks. I  mean who would have figured the bottom dwellers all season long would finally find their form and post two impressive and opportune wins in the PLAYOFFS. Must be PUMPKIN season. Come to think of it, maybe the LEAFS should scrap the blue and white and GO ORANGE this year.

And then there is PETER’S RED BRIGADE. Peter is like a hemorrhoid that won’t go away. In other words, he is one big pain in the ass. Just when I thought he was toast after about midway in the season, he resurfaces in the PLAYOFFS. He’s like alimony – a sorry full reminder that digs deep into your pockets and leaves you feeling like the morning after.

Congratulations to ANDRE GILBERT on an impressive round of 33. I won’t mention whose team ANDRE happens to represent because I’m told ANDRE is a good guy with impeccable moral character. So I would have to think ANDRE feels somewhat like CHRIS BOSH I’ll play for this team but I really don’t want to be here.

Speaking of RINGERS, we had three NET 31’s yesterday, two of which by guys that play for the two finalists in the PLAYOFFS. GO FIGURE. Kudos to TIM FRANKLIN, GREG EDMONDS and MICHAEL FREEMAN.

So GUYS, I am sorry to say next week is the FINAL WEEK of the season with the exception of the SWATFEST on the 28th. It’s been a great season, hasn’t it? I know some of you are disappointed by your performance and some elated. Nevertheless, you all tried and hopefully had FUN in doing so. And even if you didn’t make the FINAL TWO on either side of the PLAYOFF FORMAT, don’t fret. There is still ample opportunity to make some money. So PLEASE, let’s make the FINAL WEEK a bang up regardless of where you sit in the standings. The GOLF SEASON will soon be over so why not take advantage of the final week. You just never know, you might make that “once in a lifetime shot” which according to my calculations is closing in on $4,000.

OK, I’ve said enough. Till next week..  and again .. congratulations to all the winners …

Luck o the Irish. I made Karl O touch our tickets before I put them in the barrel and it worked. Tariq, Gary, Karl and Rudy hold the winning ticket and we owe the seller a brewski or 2 and maybe Marion drew the ticket for some bucks. Another great blog David. The little pictures are fabulous but the big ones do not come over. I can help you fill Peter's Glen bottle if you like.

HINT .. for those that can't see an image or have bad eye sight or tiny laptops amongst other things .. right click on the IMAGE, then scroll to VIEW IMAGE and then left click. It should come up as big as AL's ego. Once the image comes up, you can also hold down the Ctrl key while turning the mouse wheel to enlarge it even bigger. Try it on my cricket player image to see as she gets closer and closer.

Switch to Mozilla Firefix browser, IE does not work. No surprise that the 4 teams with the highest team handicaps are leading the playoffs and in that order. Go figure. Interesting stat for picking next year.Max participation points and highest handicap.

Swatfest is unfair It plays right into the hands of the SLOOOOOW player, and the Drinker. Slow players are used to taking an hour per hole, and if it takes that long, might as well have a drink. By the way, I'm in! Deke
