Welcome to the Men's Night 2010 Season

Let the Playoffs Begin

Jul 29, 2010 | Posted by Pro Shop Staff

The playoffs have begun and in typical fashion it rained!  Plenty of players showed some patience during the 2 hour rain delay, although many took he opportunity to have a few pints!

The Ayr Bears started the playoffs strong winning the week and taking the lead in the standings.  The playoff format rewards good play and the Ayr Bears played very well posting a score of 4 under par.  Led by the low gross of the week winner Mike Skimson the Ayr Bears will look to continue their fine form moving into week 2 of the playoffs.

Low Gross - Mike Skimson - 35

Low Net - Shawn Kennedy - 28

Jeff Kartechner - Closest to the 150 #10 - Sponsored by Coldwell Banker PBR - Rick Wehrle

Hot Shot of the Week Sponsored by St. Louis Bar and Grill - Gary Shearer - On hole #11 Gary hit his tee shot into the fescue, chunked his second to 80 yards and then proceeded to knock his 3d into the hole for an easy birdie.  Great shot Gary!

CANADIAN OPEN WEEK

Jul 22, 2010 | Posted by Pro Shop Staff

Well it was not raining, but it sure was windy.  Windy conditions and fast greens made it a tough day to score.  It obviously was not too tough for our Director of Instruction who managed to boot it around in 33 strokes.  John Blom also proved he can play in the tough conditions firing a net 29 to win his 2nd low net of the year.  He must be leading the player of the year race.

Alan Doherty played later in the day and managed to squeak one inside of the great shot that Ray Wilcock hit on the 5th green.  Alan's shot ended up only about 6 inches behind the cup.  After seeing where it ended up i canot believe it did not go in.

NEXT WEEK IS THE FIRST WEEK OF OUR PLAYOFFS.  ALL POINTS WILL BE RESET AND WE WILL HAVE A 6 WEEK RACE FOR THE TITLE.  CONGRATULATIONS TO WEAPONS OF GRASS DESTRUCTION WHO ARE THE REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS.  THEY EARN THE TITLE AND START THE PLAYOFFS WITH A POINT ADVANTAGE.  AS PLAYOFFS START ALL TEAMS HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE A RUN.  THE POINT SYSTEM WILL REWARD GOOD PLAY AND TEAMS CAN JUMP UP THE LEADERBOARD QUICKLY.

Low Gross - Dave Smallwood - 33

Low Net - John Blom - 29

Dave Stephenson - Longest Drive #1 - Sponsored by Watertight Roofing - Mike Thrasher & Bryce McCandless

Alan Doherty - Closest to the Pin - #5 - sponsored by Erb & Erb, Brent Taylor

Kyle Martin - Poor Performance of the Week, achieved by hitting it in the water on #4- Sponsred by the GPC

Ron Vanderbeek - Closest to the Pin #8 sponsored by Big Rock Brewery - Paul Guerriero

Hot Shot of the Week - Mike Thrasher - Mike made a spectacular putt on #7.  He hit his 2nd shot to the far right side of the green in the "finger" and drained what had to have been an 80 foot putt.......great shot Mike!

The Canadian Open, the third-oldest national open golf championship, will be played this week for the 101st time. It’s also the first time in 42 years that St. George’s Golf and Country Club is hosting the event

Here are 3 great Canadian Open Moments

1971

Then-Canadian Open sponsor Imperial Tobacco commissioned a trophy to recognize the golfer who won the U.S. Open, British Open and Canadian Open in a single year. Lee Trevino did it in a single month, as he fit in a playoff victory at Richelieu Valley outside Montreal between his win at the U.S. Open and at the British, a week later at Royal Birkdale. The wind was blowing and that suited Trevino's low-ball, Texas style. He opened with a 73, not bad given the distractions - "All those French girls in those hot pants are driving me crazy," he said - but recovered with rounds of 68, 67 and 67. He birdied the first playoff hole against Art Wall and when he later won at Royal Birkdale, earned a $25,000 bonus from Imperial Tobacco and a unique niche in golf lore that he so far has only had to share with Tiger Woods.

2000

It was the perfect shot to end the perfect summer. There were a record 50,000 people at Glen Abbey to watch Tiger Woods stalk his prey in September of 2000, going for his ninth win of the season. There were 1.5-million Canadians watching on television at home. The Tiger effect? That was a 315-per-cent ratings increase over the previous year, for those keeping count. Tied with Woods heading into the Sunday, New Zealand's Grant Waite pushed the legend to the limit. With Woods leading by a shot, Waite landed an iron pin-high on the par-five 18th to give himself a makeable eagle chance, forcing Woods's hand. Woods responded by famously ripping a 6-iron 218 yards out of the bunker, over water, dead at the flag and into the memories of everyone who saw it.

2004

A Canadian hasn't won their national championship since Fletcher in 1954. But no Canadian came as close as Mike Weir did 50 years later. It was a remarkable tournament at Glen Abbey. Vijay Singh was in the midst of one of the greatest seasons in modern golf history. Weir was a season removed from his Masters win. It was the 50th anniversary of Fletcher's victory and the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Open. Flags were flying at half-mast to honour Canadian golf great Moe Norman, who died the week the 2004 event began. On the final day, Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont., stumbled after leading by three with eight holes to play, but had putts to win on the 72nd hole of regulation and a five-footer on the second playoff hole, failing to make either, leaving Singh the sheepish champion and Weir the devastated loser.

WHISTLEBEAR ON TOP!!!

Jul 15, 2010 | Posted by Pro Shop Staff

Another fantastic day at Whistlebear for a Wednesday Men's Night is in the books.  Temperatures reaching 30 degrees with very little humidity made for a great day out on the links!

Team competition: For the 3rd week in a row, Weapons of Grass Destruction were the low team for the week with another mind boggling 267 (-21).  I am still trying to figure out what Chuck has been feeding his team on Tuesday nights.  Might have been the 12 stroke difference between scores for Mr. 45?  Great playing WOGD!  Land Sharks come in with a -14 score for 2nd place for the night and It Burns When We Tee rounded out the top 3 with a -13 score.

We have finally done it! Whistlebear was on top of the world for this weeks Men's NIght with a final score of -98 for their top 25 net scores.  Great playing team and keep it up!!

Up to date standings have Weapons of Grass Destruction on top with a 13 point lead over Ayr Bears at 213, Ayr Bears sitting at 200 points for the year.  So Jah Say sitting in 3rd spot with 193 points.  With the next 4 teams in the standings within striking distance this should be another great finish to a great Men's Night schedule!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Low Gross - Adam Ferraro - 33 (he had to make up for last weeks score)

Low Net - Tom Bevenborn - 27

Scott Ryan - Closest to the 150 Marker #13 - Sponsored by Coldwell Banker PBR - Rick Wehrle

Bobby Lavigne - Closest to the Pin - #14 - sponsored by Erb & Erb, Brent Taylor

Jeff Boich - Poor Performance of the Week, achieved by not getting it up & down from the bunker- Sponsred by the GPC

Jerry MacIntyre - Closest to the Pin #17 sponsored by Big Rock Brewery - Paul Guerriero

Hot Shot of the Week - Tim Scott- Tim pulled his 2nd shot left into the fescue on the 13th hole, proceeded to hit his 3rd shot up the hill on the green and rolled it all the way down into the hole for an easy 3! You could hear the roars around the golf course!

What an ACE!

Jul 8, 2010 | Posted by Pro Shop Staff

Like night and day!........Last Wednesday we had temperatures hardly reaching the mid teens with the brisk Whistlebear winds, having members wonder "where is Summer?!?" Well, yesterday we hit a mid day temperature of 44 degrees with no signs of the wind we complain about every other day.  The humidex so high most of the afternoon draw sticking to 9 holes only and grabbing the elusive 1 point for participation.

Needless to say it was pretty easy to tell the wind was swept under the carpet, and the temperature was up for at least one Men's Day round.  With all but 3 teams coming in below par for the day, that is the lowest the scores have been in quite some time!  The Whistlebear crew were a blistering 95 under par with their best 25 net scores yesterday, placing them in 2nd place alone for all clubs around the area, way to go guys!

Once again Weapons of Grass Destruction led by captain Chuck Meyers led his team to the overall week win with a 23 under score of 265, helped out by free agent signing Erik Pettersen who was a solid net 29 and by Steve Else who recorded a gross 36 for net 31. (must have been the inspiration of Steve's cart partner!...we won't mention his score)

Putt heads, captained by Marc St. Germain were a close 2nd with a 21 under 267.  Off in the Bunker rounding out the top 3 with a 18 under 270.

The overall standings still see WOGD hanging on to 1st place with 186 points and an outstanding 136 participants throughout the year! Putt Heads. Ayr Bears and Multiple Transgressions sitting in the top 5, all within 10 points of the overall lead. Being here every Wednesday, I have noticed participation numbrs are up a landslide from last season.  Coutos to everyone who makes an effort to come out every week for their respective teams!

Once again, Congratulations to Jeff Kartechner for his Ace on the 5th hole yesterday!

THE  ROOM WAS FULL OF PREGNANT WOMEN WITH THEIR PARTNERS. THE CLASS WAS  IN FULL SWING.

THE  INSTRUCTOR WAS TEACHING THE WOMEN HOW TO BREATHE PROPERLY AND  WAS TELLING THE MEN HOW TO GIVE THE NECESSARY ASSURANCE TO THEIR PARTNERS AT THIS STAGE OF THE  PREGNANCY.

SHE  SAID "LADIES, REMEMBER THAT EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOU. WALKING IS  ESPECIALLY BENEFICIAL. IT STRENGTHENS THE PELVIC MUSCLES AND WILL  MAKE DELIVERY THAT MUCH EASIER!"

SHE  LOOKED AT THE MEN IN THE ROOM, "AND GENTLEMEN, REMEMBER -- YOU'RE IN THIS TOGETHER --- IT WOULDN'T HURT YOU TO GO  WALKING WITH HER."

THE  ROOM SUDDENLY GOT VERY QUIET AS THE MEN ABSORBED THIS  INFORMATION.

THEN  A MAN AT THE BACK OF THE ROOM SLOWLY RAISED HIS  HAND.

"YES?"  ANSWERED THE TEACHER.

"I  WAS JUST WONDERING. IS IT ALL RIGHT IF SHE CARRIES A GOLF BAG  WHILE WE WALK?"
